I'll check that again, Mr. Jim. I made that little setup once before when I
had a small leak on the vacuum pump. I don't think it's going that

Bob,

I would like to know where it is going if I am using that much. Check the
line from the vacuum pump to the intake. Oil leaks pumped from either the
vacuum pump itself, or the shut off diaphragm on the FI pump, will end up
going
into the engine without being visible. You can put the line in a 2 litre
soda bottle for a few days to watch this.

From add to full is about 2 quarts. Are you remembering to only use the
lower half of this range. Filling to full will likely use the top quart
more
quickly.

Slow down! I know that is a boring ride to the site but blowby is a
function of engine load, as we discussed before.

I seem to remeber reading that MB specs is 1% oil use versus fuel used, or
in other worrds for every 100 litres of fuel it is OK to use 1 litre of oil.
However this might not be for your particular engine.

If all the previously mentioned mechanical checks turn up nothing other
than blowby, the rings may just be getting a bit dirty. I've had amazing
luck with running a couple of treatments of Auto RX through old diesels.
It does wonders for cleaning up sticky rings and bringing compression
back up. I've even brought a couple of diesels back to life from the
boneyard with it ( doesn't always get all of them though, it did
bring compression up on my old diesel truck from the mid 100's to 200's
, up to 405-420 psi all the way around, but one oil ring on #4 wouldn't
unstick for anything on that one and I had to pull the thing ) check out

happen is you get a clean engine.

Open the oil fill cap when running. If smoke pours out then your blow by
probably has finally exceeded what the system can handle crankcase
pressure os pushing the oil out somewhere.

This test does not work on some BMW's or Volvos as they ran positive
crankcase pressure.

Open the oil fill cap when running. If smoke pours out then your blow by
probably has finally exceeded what the system can handle crankcase
pressure os pushing the oil out somewhere.

This test does not work on some BMW's or Volvos as they ran positive
crankcase pressure.

Subject: [MBZ] Oil Consumption Creeping Up

It seems my oil consumption has crept up over the last several months. Now,
at 176K miles, it seem to be going through one quart each 600 miles or so.
It had been one per 1200 miles for the longest time. Nothing is dripping on
the drive. The exhaust looks right but smells a little off (you know what I
mean). At last valve adjustment (10K ago or so) there was no chain stretch
to speak of. She's running well overall. What do you reckon the deal is?

Bob,

Take that hose and let it pump into a coke bottle/or similar, for a few
days. A vacuum pump will still work while sucking some oil through a slipped
or
cracked diaphragm. There should be zero oil in the bottle.

Blow by is a function of engine horsepower being developed and all old
Mercedes have a threshold which you should not exceed or you will find oil
consumption increases. Maybe you are driving faster to get out of the heat
quicker?
Maybe a new route takes you up a long hill (??) on your commute to the
plant?

The blow by threshold will naturally move lower on the horsepower curve as
the engine accumulates miles. You might have to slow down a couple miles per
hour.

I am driving a bit faster (80-85mph vice 75mph) to stay in the flow of
traffic now that I'm driving out to the plant at 0600 hrs vice 0500 hrs.
Maybe I'll take the back way through Buckeye for a week or two and see what
happens.

Thanks, Mr. Jim.

Blow by is the compression gasses that leak past the rings. All engines
have a certain amount but it increases as the engine wears.

Re: [MBZ] Oil consumption

2006-02-10 Thread RELNGSON
I had a 1971 250 with the 2.8 straight 6. The car had over 300K when I
bought it. The previous owner had spent (gulp) over $7000 restoring it.
Anyway, I put almost 100,000 miles on that car and it would only burn
(leak) 1 quart in 3000 miles.

On the other hand, my '72 250 which I bought in '74 started to use oil at
about 65K miles. Might have been valve seals but I never found out. The noisy
CV
joints at that mileage and 14 mpg were enough and I bailed out after driving
it about 20K miles.

But today, I followed a '72 220D for a mile or two in north Seattle. Aside
from the noxious black cloud coming out the tailpipe, it looked like a pretty
decent car. Under all the dirt I could see fairly shiny dark green metallic
paint, an undamaged and straight bumper, brakelights that were not full of
diesel
schmutz, normal rear camber and a darkish tan interior. And a big for sale
sign in the rear window with no price. Tempting.
