[MBZ] Old MB

2014-09-05 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Good thing they built old Mercedes strong.
I just came back from the bank.
There is a storm going through and when I opened the driver's door,
Mother Nature did her best to rip off my door.

Does not appear to have suffered any harm.
I wonder how a Prius would have reacted?

Interior door latch handle brackets. The pot metal tends to break, and
is not really repairable. My W116 has two broken ones.

 Well, from off the top of my head, here is a list of parts I
 have used from my parts cars. Some may be price-prohibitive to
 buy as parts, but they are on the list anyway - you decide.
 Others may already be bad and so of no use pulling.

 Door strikes, brake calipers, brake vacuum boost, brake master
 cylinder, injector lines, injectors, SLS suspension pressure
 hose, SLS suspension valve, flasher, instrument panel, seat
 belt, dome light fixture, radiator overflow tank (turbo), oil
 fill cap, turn signals/marker light fixtures, ignition switch
 key cylinder - with a key, axle shafts, HVAC blower motor, glow
 plug relay, glow plugs, aux coolant pump, block heater cord,
 horn, ACC controller, cruise control amp, fuel gauge sender.

That is true Tim. I no longer fill my shelves with PnP goodies, since I have
an excess. Gump ate her motor, so I am now ridding myself of those parts.
Prices of parts have risen, so I may have to charge myself storage fees, but
now I can sell for higher price.

The parts were too good to pass up at the yard. Had to save them from migrant
part wreckers. Over the years, I have had opportunity to provide repair and
parts to a number of cars in need. Better to have working car, than have the
thing on the road in poor shape. The owner thinking they have to pay retail at
a stealer for repair is sad, when I can make it good for $30.

They pay peanuts. Scrap cost for the metal only. They sell plastic parts as
profits and then they are charging core fee on metal parts. If you want a hood
or door, you have to pay core, and then return with the dead part. They retain
full scrap weight and no loss of value. This is new. Old owner wanted you to
take it all and what was left over was sold for scrap. Since the scrap steel
folks now own the yard, it is all gold to them.

Re: [MBZ] Old MB Parts

Lets do the math using Gump.

I got $300 if I deliver to them.

4x wheels  = 200
hood = 80
trunk = 95
grill = 35
star = 15
tail light 2x = 40
headlight 2x = 40
cluster = 25
seat 2x = 62
injector 4x = 50
head = 200
valve cover = 20
Alt = 40
starter = 35
check strap 4x = 50
Seat belt 4x = 80
back seat = 100
glass = 400
door panels = 60
console stuff = 80
axles = 600
drive shaft = 180
brake rotors 4x = 150

and the rest of the body metal is going for at least $600 if you toss in trim.
Exhaust and pumps, intake, manifold, linkages, etc.

They would have cashed out big time if it all got picked. Then the core charge
for busted old metal, and it is gravy. Cars stay in the yard about 7 weeks
before getting crushed. Fluids get drained and recycled. Old owners did not
pick through the cars, so you could score interesting things. New guys scour
the cars for loose things and offer those at retail.

You TELL Her?

This policy does mean I burn a lot of entry fees, and it hurt to pay for a
refurb alternator because I didn't grab it when available, but on the other
hand it means my wife hates my trips to the yard just a little less, and
that's worth a lot to me. :)

Re: [MBZ] Old MB Parts

2012-03-12 Thread Dieselhead
I have a different take on this (provided you can find enough
storage space. Once I collected a spare hood, grille, fenders and
bumper (trunk and taillights for the other end) for my 200D, people
quit running into it. There is some corollary to Murphy's law:
Whatever you have, you won't need. So think of the worst things to
repair. Or the most expensive things. Buy those and keep them in
stock. That way you will never need them.

Over the bast decades, the most expensive MB parts have been chrome
and rubber (and now plastic) THere are a lot of little things you
can collect that are great to have on hand. door latches, window
cranks, window regulators (not so little, but if you have electric
windows, then are great to have) window switches, relays, headlights,
taillights, fuses, light bulbs, interior lights, if you have electric
seats, seat switches. Door checks, door lock and trunk lock sets.
Wiper arms, wiper motors. If you have a 126, get the wiper
transmission as protection against kamikaze pheasants.

Wood interior trim, plastic trim, like the stuff on the seats. Maybe
rotors, hubs, axle halves, even calipers if you rebuild or
disassemble and protect against moisture.

A brake booster can be pricey, so a spare will probably insure that
yours will not fail.

My local Pick and Pull gets the occasional W123/W126 diesel in stock.

What parts does it make sense to pull and stash to keep on hand for spares?

Any different opinions for W201/W124 cars?

I was thinking starter, alternator, klima, injectors.

Rick

Well, from off the top of my head, here is a list of parts I
have used from my parts cars. Some may be price-prohibitive to
buy as parts, but they are on the list anyway - you decide.
Others may already be bad and so of no use pulling.

Door strikes, brake calipers, brake vacuum boost, brake master
cylinder, injector lines, injectors, SLS suspension pressure
hose, SLS suspension valve, flasher, instrument panel, seat
belt, dome light fixture, radiator overflow tank (turbo), oil
fill cap, turn signals/marker light fixtures, ignition switch
key cylinder - with a key, axle shafts, HVAC blower motor, glow
plug relay, glow plugs, aux coolant pump, block heater cord,
horn, ACC controller, cruise control amp, fuel gauge sender.

m116 3.5L from Euro 350se. Setup for manual transmission, no
compression on two cylinders. No cams. Comes with rare V8 manual
transmission and flywheel. $600

Now that would be a hot setup for a 560SL!
