Re: [MBZ] One For Kaleb

2021-10-31 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Pro tip:
Build an engine receiving cradle that will fit on a pallet jack. ie a
good solid wood pallet with blocks of wood screwed to it at the proper
locations to receive the engine. Then, when the engine cradle is
detached from the car, you can lift the car off the engine with the car
hoist, and roll the engine assembly to wherever you want to work on it.
When you put the replacement engine into the cradle assembly... roll the
car back on the hoist, lift it, roll the engine assy under it, jiggle it
into position with the pallet jack, lower the car and make the hookups on
the bottom side... done and dusted...
No sore back.

From my experience, I think you will find all the electrical and engine
controls will have quick disconnects.
In most cases, the steering and front end will come out with the engine
cradle so there will be a steering shaft and shifter disconnect points.
The car will be designed around the mindset of "quick sub assembly in the

I have talked to him. He wants $2500 for the 08 and $4k for the 09 engine. Mine
is a 09 but I really need to find out if a 07 or 08 will work. To drop the
engine out on these it comes out the bottom, you drop the whole subframe then
lift the car off it.

I paid a grand for it. Thinking about sticking it on Fakebook for $2500 to see
if somebody wants it as is.

Regarding the loss of boost when shifting, this is nonsense.  Turbo gas
engines with manual transmissions have this much worse than 617a would have
it.  There is no throttle plate which closes to stop the air flow and slow
down the turbo on the 617 when you let off the gas.

I'm planning on building another one of these one day.

Ahh. Right.

But it would sure be easy to put a turbo motor in there since it
is already a OM617. Motor mounts, flywheel, driveshaft are all
correct.

If it were a _S_123 I don't think I should get another
W123. Especially since I just spent a chunk getting a sturdy
transmission for one of my diesel Suburbans.

And the trunk badges are gone.
IIRC, Marshall used to say that MBZ never made a manual transmission 617.95x,
because it would lose boost at every shift. A guy who converted a 300SD to
manual told me that it's slow off the line until it starts making boost, but
running through the gears is no problem.

What happened to the trunk labels?

https://images.craigslist.org/00h0h_e9dMhzfdj96_1200x900.jpg says the VIN
is:
123.130-10-252735

It's naturally aspirated, not a turbo.

Is the Klima relay the same as the AC relay (Rusty's site) or AC
Compressor Control Unit ( N6) in the FSM?

I think so. It's the thing that gets the signal from the
compressor's RPM sensor. It's worth at least cleaning the
contacts on the one you do have. You could consider a
resolder job on its guts too.

Personally, I love how all of the pictures show the Drivers side, and
the text indicates there was a sideswipe on the Passenger side. What
.. no pic of the damage?

Kaleb confided:

Im just too car heavy at the moment.

Are you trying to get rid of anything? I'll be driving through on the 10th
of Sept with a small truck full of grandmother swag for SWMBO and I bet I
could pull something home. Anything diesel with kick-arse AC?

85 300D, white with tan, ac, windows, everything works except cruise.
Paint decent paint, with some messed up paint on trunk. Runs and drives
excellent, will probably need valves adusted and purge, starts great
whel cold, even down to the single digits but runs rough for a couple of
minutes, typical. Will need an alignment soon probably, and new tires
on the front. Dont drive it anymore. Would be and excellent car for
somebody.
