Boy, that is a lot of car for the money, about 22 cents/lb!? you get twice as
many CV joints, and driveshafts, and an expensive and troublesome transfer
case.? It probably has had the transfer case replaced by now.? Audi once found
that full time 4wd actually improved MPG (something about driving a tire made
it roll easier), but I wouldn't hang your hat on that little item.? More
substantial, full time 4wd is supposed to improve handling, especially in the
rain and snow (what is that stuff?).

On the positive side, my 94 Bravada, with full time 4wd, just passed 190,000
miles and has never needed any work on the drive train.? My 98 ML320 had the
transfer case repaced by the PO at just over 100K, and recently I had to repace
the front driveshaft due to a bad CV joint. I also had a leaking pinion seal on
the front differential (yea, you get two of those ,too!) but that was an easy
job with the driveshaft out.? ML just passing 157000 miles.

Probably, your biggest worry might be rebuilding the rear suspension so look
for work history in that area.? Look for cheap, off brand stuff, like cheap
tires, cheap battery, etc., to indicate the mentality of the PO's.

Jim in Phoenix

Is 4-matic a synonym for headache?

2008-07-21 Thread andrew strasfogel
My friend bought a 2000 E320 4matic (white/blue) a year ago for $13K, and
was tickled because the negotiated price from the indy dealer was several $K
below blue book. He was raving about it to me, but I found the front seat
painfully uncomfortable and was unimpressed overall. In the one year he
owned it he drove less than 10k miles and had several problems with check
engine light issues and expensive work (SRS). He finally decided to sell
it when his mechanic determined that the transmission was on its last legs
(at 106 K miles!). The car was showroom perfect in every other regard. He
advertised it on CL for $12,500 and after several weeks gave up and sold it
for $8K to a college student. When he delivered the car the kid's dad
refused to pay a dime more than $7,000 because of the transmission expense.
Talk about a cr*ppy investment

It probably is on its 3rd or 4th by now, in fact. There were
incremental improvements to the Porsche-designed 1st-gen 4matic system
all through the '90s. With the 210 and later chassis IIRC M-B
switched to a simpler design. Funny thing is that you never hear from
Porsche guys about problems with the first-gen Carrera 4s with a
similar AWD system. (Or do you? Never a Relingson around when you
need one!)

But it is super cheap. There's a fuse you can pull to disable the
4Matic; then it doesn't matter if the transfer case is TU or not. Why
not just buy it assuming it's a regular old 2wd 300E with slightly
worse mileage and consider the AWD icing on the cake if it works?

...huuummm.

I knowit's crazy cheap. So if the 4-matic is TU you can simply pull a
fuse (forgive Dr. Booth, God rest his soul) and it becomes invisible? What
kind of mileage does one of these get?
