Growing up in Riyadh there were a million 504 diesels from Syria and Turkey
that would come down yearly for the Haj. Definitely a preferred vehicle,
which is really all the endorsement a car needs in retrospect. They would
load them like crazy. A wagon is always attractive but then you give up the
funky humped trunk silhouette. I never saw a wagon over there.

The 240 diesel was a dog. A buddy even turboed one and it still wouldnt get
out of its own way. 6 cylinders I think. Maybe 85hp.

I had a 240 wagon gasser before my 85 td. Honestly it was a better car in
many ways. Primarily because it was simpler and a 5 speed. Less maintenance
for sure. I put an ipd swaybar on it and it cornered great. It was also
possible for a 6'5" person to sleep flat in the back along one side, which
is not possible in the Merc unless you remove the seat bottoms instead of
tilting them.

The only French cars I ever saw in the midwest were the 1980s-era Renault-based
Alliance and Encore that were made by AMC but sold as Renaults. While these
cars got some good reviews at the time, they were underpowered and didn't sell
well. I remember them as market failures.

Seeing a Peugeot of any vintage around here is extremely uncommon.

[MBZ] peugeots

2009-01-17 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks,

I noticed the discussions on Peugeots. We drive 2 of the 300td and 2
Peugeot 505 sw8 cars (gas ZDJL engines.) I've mostly driven peugeots
since 1985 and about 6 years ago i started running some Mercedes
diesels mostly on WVO. In my opinion a 505 peugeot is a much lighter
feeling car than a 300td, has nicer seats, better climate control etc
than a Benz. Most of the electrics, and fuel injection systems are
Bosch, so no surprises there. Late model (86-92) peugeots are
extremely reliable when well maintained. As for parts availability,
it's a bit sketchy on certain odd things such as SW antenna grommets
but for the most part, there are a lot of parts and a lot of parts
cars. This list, peugeo...@yahoogroups.com is the Peugeot equivalent
of the MB list.

I guess you have to subscribe at yahoo groups.

I wheel and deal some Peugeot parts and project cars, myself.

thanks,

xx rick
