Ha ha ha! Exactly my problem. (Sigh.)

Especially when using it for fasteners where the torque figure seems
absurdly low, like the 14 lb-ft or whatever for the oil filter cap
nuts.

I carry a cheap torque wrench with short extension and socket with a Sharpie
mark on the scale at the proper torque. I give it to the tire changer and
ask him to torque it to the mark. Been doing that over thirty years with no
problems other than arguments from tire changers that their air wrenches are
set to the proper torque, etc., etc. When I get home I recheck the torque
which is usually ok. The torque may be more critical on aluminum wheels.

Hee hee, that one made me smile.

No a helicoil is a brand name of wire inserts that you can use to repair
stripped out threaded holes.

I wonder if they have one small enough to fix the exhaust cover bolt on my
chainsaw? That stripped out a couple weekends ago. The saw is probably 35 years
old, the bolt is steel going into aluminum in a high vibration environment...
I was just going to tap the next size up going from standard to metric...

Re: [MBZ] Ranting and raving

2007-11-28 Thread LarryT
Just as we have been discussing recently - it's almost impossible to have
work done properly - we pay good money to have a professional (supposedly)
do this or that on our cars - yet they seem to be unable to do the simplest
of chores - torqueing lugs or replacing oil drain plugs is routinely done
incorrectly. It should be simple but they screw it up/

I guess things haven;t changed in 50 years - when I worked as a VW/Porsche
mechanics apprentice (1968), I was given menial chores to do - oil changes
for instance - and since I was paid virtually nothing, the shop made lots of
money. - But at least I was trained in how to perform the various jobs. I
don;t think the training is happening these days.

Re: [MBZ] Ranting and raving

2007-11-28 Thread LarryT
That was exactly my thoughts. The idea of changing a flat on the side of a
road when its dark and rainy is no fun.

Add to that, me not being able to loosen the lug and it;s very embarrassing.
;-)

When I got home I had #1 son (construction worker & much stronger than I) go
around and loosen, then torque all lugs (he knows how a torque wrench
works). Now, I KNOW they're right. And I will not be going back to that
shop.

The worst part was that guys attitude that he could not *possibly* have done
something incorrectly. I may eventually go back to explain to management
that they need to train their people in the use of a clicker torque wrench -
the guy appeared to think it stopped tightening when the clicking occurred.
I need to let them know as I am sure someone will have a flat and be unable
to change it.

Another reason why I won't let a tire shop touch my lug bolts. I take
the wheels off at home, take them to the shop for the new tires, and
put them on myself (you have to have more than one car for this trick

It is advisable to double check the torque on wheel bolts/nuts after a
visit to the tire shop, unless you know that the shop do good work.
Another side affect of over tightened lugs is that if you have a flat it
