A friend has one, possibly 40's vintage, 18 or so, 1/2 drive.
The last time he took it to Sears (~1980) they didn't want to
rebuild it, they wanted to exchange it for a 12. He declined.
A lot of his tools have walked off in the last couple of years,
but I hope he still knows where that ratchet is.

He had this great idea to take an old six horse trailer, close off the windows,
and make a mobile tool crib. Put a 5 hp compressor in it, a couple roller
cabs full of hand tools, etc. Then he parked it at the horse farm, and the farm
help started helping themselves. You'd find his best air impact wrench literally
in manure outdoors where somebody used it to fix the tractor, dropped it on the
ground, got on the tractor and drove off, things like that.
Hand tools just evaporated, along with two out of three kerosene heaters, etc,
etc.
He knew ten years ago that anything the clowns got their hands on would be
destroyed
or disappeared, but he parked the trailer over there anyway.

To take it apart would be a pretty obvious thing to do, but doing so
somewhow never occurred to me. Turns out the problem is not so much
that it is full of dirt (it was) but that one tooth is stripped and the
jam was due to the broken piece of metal going on walkabout into the
ratchet mechanism. Don't really notice the missing tooth in operation.

I went to Sears and they wanted to exchange for a new one without even
looking at it. Because I'm such a sentimental fool, I asked for a
repair kit instead; they're currently out and the shipment will be in on
Thursday. Upon thinking about it I think I'll exchange it and pay the
difference to upgrade to a fine-tooth thin profile version. I really
like the 3/8 one I bought last year.

I saw a while ago that Sears had reissued its 1940something ratchets,
gold-plated for BMW mechanics. So hopefully parts are available again,
too. It is worth a shot...

When I broke the guts of my 1968 era Craftsman rachet, they wouldn't give
me a new one and insisted on a repair kit. Still works just fine (and I
think I did it twice with the socket retaining mechanism being the part
that failed).

I use mostly Snap-On tools but had a very old Craftsman ratchet.
Long handle, fine tooth. It was very handy for certain operations.
The innards wore out and Sears did not have anything close to it.
I opted to keep the ratchet rather than exchange for their newer
version of that tool. It still worked in the on direction so I used
it like that until I got lucky and bought a milk crate of used tools.
there was a short handled ratchet with the same mechanism. I swapped
the guts and still use this 40+ year old tool. I take extra
precautions to keep it alive.

This brings up a question I've been meaning to ask for a while now.
I've got a 1/2 Craftsman ratchet which is older than I am and has an
oil port on the end. I'm sure it has never been serviced. Is there any
particular oil I should use?

Thanks,
Tom

I use ATF in a pump dispenser for generic oiling like that.

Anything is better than nothing. My personal preference is to soak
them in a coffee can with a mix of Marvel Mystery oil and whatever
dino motor oil I have an open bottle of. I put the plastic cover back
on and save it for the next time. I set them in another empty coffee
can until they drain enough not to make puddles in my tool chest.
