Just found this on the MBCA forum today (but dated 7/30/05) from Paul
Persico:

>> vacuum actuators can be removed without removing the dash. <<

The center nozzle actuator can be accessed by removing the glove box,
the right center nozzle and the rubber hood that supplies the center
nozzles.

The defroster nozzle flap actuator is somewhat more difficult(and is
most likely the problem). To do this the instrument panel and both the
panels in the driver's side knee well must be removed. The blanket below
the instrument panel needs to be moved aside.

The reason I say that the defroster nozzle flap actuator is most likely
the problem is that that's where the cleaner used to clean the temp
sensor seems to accumulate. It doesn't make any sense to me but that's
what I was told AND what I've experienced first hand. It pools in there
and the rubber deteriorates. This actuator has two positions. One
section is provided with vacuum T'd off of the center nozzle flap
actuator. You can check for leaks by MightyVacing the at the vacuum
solenoids in the center console.:

And this one:

The rubber cover between the center vent and the box??? Can you or anyone else
expand on that? I was just in there and don't recall seeing anything that
helps me understand where you are headed there. I'm sure if I take a second
look it will clear up, but more info would be very welcome.

The duct between the air box and the vents is actually a rectangular shape.
It's connected between the two by a rubber sleeve that you can carefully push
back out of the way to gain access to the area where the lever is.

When you say "box" do you mean the evaporator box? Where the coil is?? I
should ask, where is the servo? Is it below the vent? Behind it? Off to the right/left?

You can *almost* get to this area by removing the glove compartment liner and going
in from that direction. I've replaced the vacuum actuator this way, but I don't
advise it for the faint of heart or the large of hand. I still have the scars to
prove it. I was being stubborn because I was absolutely NOT going to R&R the
dash pad to get to the actuator.

I'll poke my head in there this evening and see what happens.

It will make sense once you get a look at things.

This is the post I recall:

The vacuum actuator is in front (forward) of the center vents.
In other words it's between the vents and the firewall, making access to it
nearly impossible short of pulling the dash pad. I tried it from both sides,
with the cluster removed and from the glovebox hole. No deal.

I'm open to suggestions (other than my "pencil prop").

Dan Penoff described such a procedure as I recall. I'll look and see if
I can find a copy.

Andrew,

The procedure described here is for the right and left side ring
removal..

Maybe it applies to the center also.

There are no levers in the Type III climate control system. The round
vents swivel but even when open there is no air coming through on any
setting.

We may attend the annual picnic but I'm not sure about the driving
