Re: [MBZ] SECOND UPDATE! RE: OT: Land Yacht problem

Fresh gas and some fuel system cleaner might indeed clear up the problem.
I'm still not in agreement that a new battery had anything to do with it.

Might also have simply been due to the car sitting unused for too long, and
it needed to be exercised a bit to get all the juices flowing again.

[MBZ] SECOND UPDATE! RE: OT: Land Yacht problem

2017-07-17 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Good ideas!

However, my brother texted me yesterday and said:

"I don't want to jinx myself but I drove the Lincoln 50 miles around town
today. Stop and go traffics, idling at stop lights all without any problems!"

It was just as hot as it was a few days before. It had a half tank of gas when
he bought it. Maybe he got some crap from the old gas and it has run through
it and now with good gas its fine?

Look to see I there is any kind of carb float bowl preheat provision (e.g. to
reduce emissions). There may also be a missing insulating gasket between the
car and manifold. Or look for places the fuel line is too close to hot stuff,
like the exhaust manifold.

I had a 1973 240Z with side-draft (Hitachi?) carbs and there was a water
jacket around the float bowls. During warmup, engine coolant circulated around
the float bowls to warm the fuel so it would vaporize better. There was a
thermostat intended to stop this coolant flow then the coolant reached 120F (as
I recall) but mine had failed in the open position (full flow). The thermostat
looked like a simple plumbing adapter so I didn’t realize what it was for
almost 10 years. It drove me nuts but only during really hot weather and at
high altitudes, typically driving coast to coast for PCS moves.
