Re: [MBZ] Source of silver lacquer paint for bundt wheels

2009-05-05 Thread OK Don
Power washing will wash you as much as the wheels, due to all the convoluted
concave and convex shapes. BTDT. I finished cleaning mine with various types
of wheels in the Dremel, and lot of time. I didn't keep the car (SLC) long
enough afterwards to know if the paint stuck or not ---

Power washing is a good start. If you don't get it right the first time,

Wacko was in reference to head shops, not body shops, although I
guess there is a proliferation of wacko body shops too. If the body
shop works on cars, you are good to go. If the head shop works on
engines, you are in the right kind of head shop.

Re: [MBZ] Source of silver lacquer paint for bundt wheels

2009-05-05 Thread Loren Faeth
Bead blasting will take off all the dirt and old finish, or at least
roughen the surface enough for the new paint to stick. Power washing
is a good start. If you don't get it right the first time, you will
end up bead blasting 2 coats of paint and clearcoat to do it right
the second time. As Larry said, the Bundts have many complex shapes,
and are not practical to hand sand. Bead blasting is a good
suggestion. Many body shops can do this and some head shops
(automotive machine shops, not the Wacko kind) can bead blast for you.

Go down to Dollar General, buy the silver spray paint that costs about
$2, works great.

Re: [MBZ] Source of silver lacquer paint for bundt wheels

2009-04-29 Thread LWB250

Wurth used to make both the silver paint and the clear coat, then stopped
making the clear coat. Don't know about the paint.

I did a set of bundts back in the late 90s with the Wurth silver and used
Minwax spray spar varnish (gloss) and it held up very well. I sold the wheels
to a buddy of Marshall's that lived in Cleveland, and Marshall told me that the
finish was holding up well after 2-3 Cleveland winters.

I will add that the wheels were media blasted and very, very clean before they
were painted...

Re: [MBZ] Source of silver lacquer paint for bundt wheels

2009-04-29 Thread Rich Thomas
I recall previous discussions on this topic concluding that the $1/can
(might be $2 now) silver stuff from Lowes or HD looks/works just fine.
You can buy clear enamel too if you want to put a protective layer on.

I was thinking about this the other day, mama's new 84 ride's wheels
look worse than the 79 TD's. I was thinking to swap them.
