... So why can't the keys be reprogrammed? Seems like you could replace a
ROM if you had a programmer?

Do they really provide an extra $500 of security to a vehicle?

Best,

  Hi,

 I am looking to get a spare key for my 2004 E320 4matic. I called a
local Mercedes dealer and they I would have to present my driver's license,
registration and pay in advance ($270!!!). When the key arrived I would
have to pick it up with the vehicle before they would release the key.

I asked if I could purchase a used key on ebay and get it programmed.
They said the keys are programmed one time according to the VIN and cannot
 be reprogrammed.

Are there any other options to getting a new key which don't cost an
 arm and a leg?

 Thanks,

 Bob

Google 'mercedes key programming software'.
If you have one original key, you can get the code (SKC) than find a e-bay
virgin key.

And if anybody does get you a virgin key, you'll still have to pay the dealer to
program it. Hopefully you can find a dealer that will give you a good deal on
the labor for buying the part from them.

In a nutshell, no.

Keys, along with other such safety items, are dealer only, as far as I know.
MB has really tightened up on this and makes it pretty near impossible to
something like a key from anyone but them.
