Thanks Curt,

I replaced the fule filter recently. I'll check it for obstructions. then I'll
run propane around the manifold and near the carbs. Hopefuly that will show
where the problem is.

Any chance it can be the fuel pump? what PSI should it read?

Thanks everyone.

If you say so, but mine has a melted socket in the fusebox, and the strip

If it were a snowmobile I'd say you had an airleak or a plugged fuel filter.
I've had several snowmobiles that I had to baby up to speed but once they got
there ran fine. One was crud in the tank that would plug the fuel filter in
seconds, the other was a ripped carb boot.

Re: [MBZ] Stalls in gear while weather is cool

2006-09-20 Thread 72benz250
Thanks Trampas,

I'll check the fast idle this weekend. The choke on these carbs, Zenith INAT
32/40's is electric. so the choke pull off happens on it's own.

Another interesting thing happened yesterday. After I got home, I tightented
the choke spring and took her for a little spin, filled up the tank. Ran fine
until I hit a red light then when I tried to take off, she stumbled. I pumped
the peddal, still stumbled. I had to lay off all pedals and she slowly
accelarated on her one.

No problem picking up speed and cruising after that until I came to another
light, then the same thing. Engine was definately at full operating themerature
at that point.

I looked at the accelerator pump and I'm getting a good stream.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks again.

George

2006-09-20 Thread Trampas
Tom,

Years ago when I worked as a mechanic a guy came in with a 4 cylinder
caravan with a Mikinui carburetor that was hosed. So I rebuilt the
carburetor for the guy. Latter I started getting several of these
carburetors in the shop for rebuilding. I found out that most people had
said that the carburetors were not rebuildable. These were by far more
complicated than the quadra-junks. I have also rebuilt the 3 barrel
carburetors for the old Hondas as well as for most other cars.

Usually after doing a few rebuilds I figure out what jets and passages plug
up on the carburetors and was able to do quick fixes. For example on the
2.6L caravans they air jet in top of carburetor would plug up. These were
simple fixes as spraying carb cleaner in correct jets.

Re: [MBZ] Stalls in gear while weather is cool

2006-09-20 Thread Trampas
George,

I am not sure on your carburetor but most choke systems work by having a
flap close off the air such that the engine runs richer. When you are first
starting the car the choke flap is fully closed, once started most cars have
a "choke pull off" this is a vacuum actuator which opens the choke flap
slightly to allow more air in thus leaning out mixture. The way to think
about it is that you need a really rich mixture to get engine started then
slightly rich mixture while engine is cold, then normal mixture when engine
is warm.

Thus the choke pull off will pull off the choke flap when engine is started
to make the mixture slightly rich but not as rich as if the flap was fully
closed.

Most carburetors have a fast idle cam this is a stepped cam that as the
choke flap is closed it will open the throttle butterfly. Thus if the choke
pull off pulls the choke flap open too far then what happens is that engine
does not run as rich as needed and it will also cause the fast idle to be
disabled. The net result is that you put it in gear and it stalls.

So basically you have two basic causes for stalling in gear after start. 1
is that the engine is not running rich enough. 2 is that the fast idle is
not high enough. Actually I guess there is a 3rd which is a combination of 1
and 2.

Trampas, Tom,

Thanks for your help.

Here is where I'm confused, and I will be looking closer at the fast idle
and choke when I get home tonight,

I did let the car warm up until the thermostat opened, I noticed the temp
drop. At that point shouldent the chokes be open completely? At that point
the 100C switch will shut off the fast idle circuit. It still occured with
the engine warmed up.

Trampas, you said " choke pull-off is pulling choke off too much". I'm not
sure I understand. Choke is on?

Is it possible the carbs are still a little on the lean side and causing the
stall in gear?

Thanks to everybody for their help.

Hi Gang!

Recently I got an IPOD and been trying to use it, rather unsuccessfully,
with a cassette adapter in my 1990 126. (Think the radio is a model #1430)
When I insert the adapter, it ejects about 19 in 20 times. Plays tapes
perfectly, though.

Talked to the folks at Becker.they say that radio was not designed to
be used with cassette adapters. I should send them the radio (with $100, I
think) and they would install a separate interface so I could plug the IPOD
in directly.

Has anyone on this list done this already? Worth it?

Thanks,.

I admire you; those are the most complicated carburetors in existence.

Could be the fast idle not set correctly or choke pull-off is pulling choke
off too much. Ahh the old days of carburetors, been awhile since I have even
thought about carburetors, I use to be able to rebuild quadra-Jets in my
sleep.

It sounds to me like the choke is not working properly.

hi all,

I had the head decked on my 72 250 W114, took a while. I rebuilt the
carburetor. Fired it up on Sunday, stalled. Tightened the choke plate and I
was on the road.

This morning, weather was a little cool, 65 vs 85 on Sunday, and it took a
lot of coaxing to get her running. When I did, putting her in drive or
reverse cased her to stall. Let her get to temperature, failed again.

Any idea what may be causing this trouble?

Thanks

So at lunch I took a look at the gauges and indeed #10 is busted. Looks like it
might actually have been a stress break. I had a spare but that blew instantly.
When I say it blew I mean it, the fuse peeled way back off the ceramic.
Now, the spare was truely questionable, it had been in the fuse box for who
knows how long. At home I have (if I can find it) a kit Rusty had sent me,
hopefully a good fuse will fix things otherwise I expect its time for a trip
into the dash pod.
