Re: [MBZ] The Dangers of Replacing Coil Springs on Your Vehicle - Full Clip

2013-02-25 Thread Michael Canfield
Agreed. Reminds me of when I worked in the auto shop at Sears many moons
ago. Customer brought in an AWD Subaru complaining of a squealing noise in
the front end after a brake job was done at another Sears store. The
alignment tech said he would check it out. He put it up on the alignment
rack, slid the lifting part of the rack under the front of the car and
raised it. Then he proceeded to get in the car. I said "aren't you going
to raise the rear wheels as well?". He said "WTF do you know tireboy?" and
started the car. I shut my mouth, stepped away and watched him drive right
off the front of the rack and land the front bumper on top of the brand new
Hunter alignment machine.

He was glad to ask the lowly tireboy how he thought was a good idea to get
the car down to cover his ass. Luckily for his career I assisted him in
building a makeshift bridge so we could back the car back onto the rack.

They not only said they didn't read the instruction, they didn't even
look at the tool, if indeed it was a Klann compressor.

When you look at the compressor Q loans, there are clearly indents
and locks that have to be in place.

I have only used the Klann once, All other times, I lower the LCA
with a floor jack, guided and gently releasing the compression
on the spring. I am more comfortable with the jackstand and floor
jack method. Of course with a crapsman jack like we have at work,
the floor jack method is deadly as the jack release can't be
controlled.

Re: [MBZ] The Dangers of Replacing Coil Springs on Your Vehicle - Full Clip

2013-02-23 Thread Peter Frederick
I've had a coil spring slip out of those two outside clamp type
compressors (a strut from my old Buick Century). Luckily I was smart
enough to keep well away from it, so when the strut mount shot up and
hit the roof of the garage it missed me. Hit me in the head coming
down, which was bad enough, but I'd probably had a broken jaw otherwise.

Compress automotive springs with great care and respect!

Not just springs, either. My friend Hans was telling me mechanic
stories from his just out of school days in the early 60s. The had an
old German car in the shop (I don't remember the make) where the rear
drums sat on tapers, and were always stuck. They had one that refused
to move in spite of the beefiest guy in the shop applying all the
strength he had on the puller, and it was time for lunch. All but
Hans went out, but he'd brought something and was sitting in the break
room eating where there was a terrific crash from the shop, followed
by the sound of all the spare parts in the store room falling off
their shelves.

The drum had finally let go, shot across the shop into the store room
and up the wall, dumping most of the stock of parts onto the floor.
If they'd been working on it when it came off, one of them would
likely have been seriously injured or killed.

Makes you think, eh?

Peter
