Re: [MBZ] To tow or not to tow

2006-09-06 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Yeah but the proposed weight to be towed is relatively light and if the auto
box is in good condition (ie. no slippage) and he manually keeps the engine
revs up and starts in 1st gear, he should be alright. Also check the fluid
level and if old change it before towing.
If it was a heavy towing weight, constantly towing, towing in hot weather or
living in very hilly country I would say yes fit an extra oil cooler.
While on the subject of towing, I will advise prospective car buyers to be
careful when buying a vehicle fitted with a tow bar. Towing puts a lot of
strain on the drive train of a vehicle and if possible buy a vehicle without
a towbar.

Geez Man, you live in western NC. Them mountains be transmission killers
without a trailer.

I am no expert on M-B automatic transmissions, but I do have experience
destroying GM automatic transmissions by towing with them. The
automotive and light truck transmissions heat up significantly and
destroy the clutches if you add much trailer weight. I would only tow
with the heavy duty truck transmissions.

That I can see.Makes sense..But still for towing I think a remote
cooler is a much better idea. Maybe a combination of the two is better than
just one or the other. I have always just deleted the one in the radiator
and had good luck. But maybe that was just luck...LOL

There is no way a cooler built in to the radiator can
cool enough for towingIt will actually add heat to the tranny.

It's supposed to. Heats the tranny up to working temperature
faster in the morning. Think of it as a first-order temperature
regulator mechanism more than just a cooler.

Add a big tranny cooler and get rid of the (if MB has one) loop through the
radiator for cooling. There is no way a cooler built in to the radiator can

Have lurked here for years now and thanks to all who have brought light
to my occasional issues. I know this has been covered in ages past but I
can't remember the details so I hope some of you will fill me in.
I need to use my 82 300D Turbo to do some towing of a 5 x 8 foot
enclosed cargo trailer. I can't find any information on limits or towing
capacities on this vehicle. I first need to add the hitch. Where is the
best place to look? I should reject any idea of bumper mounted hitches,
right? I'm interested in towing 1500 - 2000 lbs. Will the vehicle do it
safely? What about stress on the transmission? What should I consider as
an acceptable tongue weight? Please advise if you have experience with
these issues. Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] To tow or not to tow

2006-09-06 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I have a tow bar set up on an old 123 from South Africa which is about to go
to the graveyard, but it is in Australia so shipping is going to be a
killer.

Anyway have a look around your local wrecking yards for S/H tow bars.
2000lbs is nothing, not even a tonne (we speak mostly metric over here in
Oz), so I would not think you would have a problem but use the gear stick to
keep the revs up going up hills. More revs equals more oil flow through the
tranny.
From memory I think you are allowed 200kgs downforce on your backside but my

memory is wonky.
