In addition to checking the linkage rods and bushings as Kaleb suggested, check the engine mounts and the transmission mount. A combination of broken or collapsed engine mounts and/or transmission mount might possibly have shifted the engine/transmission enough that reverse does not engage. Sometimes you can see an engine/transmission shift just by looking at the fan which should be parallel to, and centered to the radiator. The car can be driven with no indication of problems even though the engine/transmission may be shifted/mis-aligned. "Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: > I think so but I would check the linkage first. Re: [MBZ] Transmission helper ideas, Please!
I'm hoping some of you experienced gentlemen can assist in a diagnosis and possible repair of the transmission on our 1980 300TD. The reverse gear stopped working suddenly after a sharp drop into a hole in our driveway at a slow speed of about 10 mph. No sound at all, just would not engage or try to move when we started it up a few minutes later. So, we thought the transmission must be on its way to complete shutdown, however, we continued to drive it for another 4 or 5 thousand miles. (you do get creative in how you park when you can only move forward!) It just kept going and going! Now we are needing to repair some ball joints and other stuff in front end. The question is now, can the tranny be repaired with a reasonable cost and effort to make it worthwhile to order the front end parts and repair that? We love this car! The shift lever seems tight. I have read about how the bushings can be damaged and cause trouble. But it doesn't seem like that is it. Is it worth changing them, just in case? Really would appreciate some feedback and advise! Thanks so much, we really learn a lot from this list! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com There may be an adjustment on the reverse band. Mitch might know. My suggestion is to call the guy who knows all, and if it can be saved, he will tell you! Call Mark at SUn Valley Mercedes Transmissions. 818-782-2300.Email: Sun Valley Mercedes Transmissions If you have to have a rebuilt transmission, Mark is the guy to buy it from. Most or all of the rebuilt MB transmissions in the US are rebuilt at Sun Valley. Best of all, he loves old Diesels. THat is what he drives. His website has instructions about how to go through the adjustment procedure. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
