Typical behavior that I experienced there as well. There’s no logic to many of the member’s thought processes, and what’s worse is that few, if any, are interested or willing to listen to someone with direct experience. There’s no way I would set foot in any of those groups again. They’re a total waste of space. Hang in there Rusty, it will get better. My brother in law is facing a long battle over his neck in a few weeks, since he fractured his C1 vertebrae and tore the ligament between C1 and C2 in a skiing accident in March (in Italy, adding to the fun). He's been in a halo for 7 weeks, six more to go, and they will then decide whether or not to fuse C1-C2. Either way, his not used his neck muscles for 15 weeks when the halo comes off, so he'll have to recover them -- not something that's gonna be fun. I got a call at work; the car (99 w210.025) made some belt squeal, then a thunk, accompanied by a loss of power steering and a battery charge error message. ( approximately 250yds from home) She was able to discern that the belt was off, and that the (relatively new) tensioner assembly was intact. When I got home I noticed that the belt was in a knot, the engine compartment was soaked with what glitstened like coolant... I saw that the space formerly occupied by the alternator pulley was largely vacant, save for a slightly tapered shaft with an broken-off end. I popped off the radiator cap and saw a couple of streams of coolant spray across the fan... I found the pulley back under the turbo; it looks like it has some sort of mechanism inside, from the look of it, it was a friction/ interference based freewheel (as opposed to a pawl based one)... Apparently the clutch gave out catastrophically, taking the end of the shaft with it, then the belt played the sling, the pulley the rock, and the end of the radiator (the aluminum plate that crimps on the end tank) was left to play the part of Goliath. MBCA discounts or not, there is no way I will be buying an alternator from the dealership... I wonder if there are any worldpac warehouses up around bmore that I can do a pickup from? (radiator, alternator and belt)...
