Glenn,

You were right!  It started when I jumped the relay connectors.  I suppose that
means I need a new starter relay, correct?

Many Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,
Try jumping from here.  It could be solenoid (built in, I believe) or bad
sopt(s) on armature.  Good luck.

You may have already done this step, but you should first run a 12V jumper
to your switch spade on the solenoid and see if it cranks, that will bypass
your ignition switch and associated wiring. If it starts that way, your
starter and solenoid pass the test.

Is it worth saving a used starter from a car that went to the crusher for a
rainy day?

Starter and alternator don't take up much space in relation to their
replacement
cost. I'd grab the fuse and relay panels complete before crushing too, along
with the power antenna and probably the taillamps, turn signals and instrument
cluster.

Does it fit a car you have? Did it work when removed? Do you have
out-of-the way space to plop it in until the rainy day?

Re: [MBZ] W123 Starter

2008-07-09 Thread Archer
I usually jumper the starter relay (the small terminal with a wire going to
it, to the the big cable) to see if the starter cranks. Be sure the car is
out of gear. If it cranks, the trouble is probably in the switch or wiring.
Tomorrow someone who is familiar with your cars wiring can probably tell you
which terminals under the hood you can jumper instead of doing it directly
on the relay. Another problem can be a poor ground cable from the engine to
the chassis.

Can the solenoid be replaced separately from the starter? What other starter
relays, fusable links, etc., might be at fault?
Thanks,

Neutral safety switch. Does it start in N instead of P?
Try moving the gear shift with the key engaged at start.
