Come to think of it, there was a second vacuum reservoir in the left fender near the hood on my 79 300TD. A PO had disconnected it and everything still worked fine so I never gave it a second thought until now. Mine was some kind of plastic. I don't recall the details but it took maybe an hour to drop the vacuum reservoir. I think there were screws or nuts under the back compartment liner. I think I used soapy water and blew into it with my mouth via a hose to locate the leaks.
