[MBZ] What can someone tell me about these Mercedes?

2009-07-29 Thread Douglas
I have been looking at some gassers lately and don't really know much about
them. What has mostly captured my attention has been 420's and some 380's.

That's a W140. Big heavy car. Wonderful to drive. Horrible car to fix.
Many electronics. There are probably 50 electric motors in the beast.
More if you have retractable side mirrors, memory positioning for the
rear view mirror, or retractable sunshades. Most desirable in my mind
is the 1999 S500 with the stability control option. Stay away from the
S600. The V12 is a money pit.
The thing weighs close to 5000 lbs. You need the S500 engine to drive
aggressively in city traffic. Any engine including the S350 diesel
will work fine on the highway with long entrance ramps.

Yes, all side windows are laminated glass which is often confused for
bulletproof on eBay and Craigslist. First clue is that no one who
knows what they are talking about uses the term bulletproof. It's
bullet resistant.

EVERYONE should own and drive a W140 at some point in their life.

Your first trip to a stealership will cost you at least as much as
you paid to buy the car.

I'll second the feeling about the 140's road worthiness. We just took our
1997 S320 to Atlanta and back - probably 1,000 total for the week. This one
you look forward to driving. The Parktronic is helpful for getting it where
you want it [my darling wife likes to back into spaces], the moisture
sensing wipers work great, etc. We love that car, though I suspect it is a
bit underpowered with that 6 were we to do any mountain driving. Now I have
my fingers crossed that the extra $ we paid because it was sold and serviced
at the dealer we bought it from will pay off. I know I don't want to do any
serious repairs on that one.

I believe Satish Tummala customized a 560, didn't he?
He is the guy that put another huge engine in a late model car.
Look him up on the web... I will...

I bought my W123 manuals from Satish, not knowing he was this devoted
to fast cars.
He was living in Oak Park, IL doing residency, so I drove to my old
homietown and visited with him. He loved W123 as that is what he grew
up fixing and driving.
Crazy guy.

Oh, why mention Satish? - he was from Detroit and is in that area

Re: [MBZ] What can someone tell me about these Mercedes?

2009-07-29 Thread Loren Faeth
I think the 420SEL is most likely the cream of the 126 gasser
crop. Has enough power, gets the same mileage (FAPP) as the smaller
engines, and there are a lot of them around. You can find one that
has been well maintained, with records pretty cheap. Buy one out of
the south to get a rust free one.

For my money, the 126 is the best looking MB built in recent decades
(aside from the 113)

The 560SEL is just as reliable, but tend to eat more gasoline.

What a tremendous amount of work! And all I want to do is get our stock
