Based on earlier discussions on this board about dash cameras in early
2016, I researched and bought a dash camera in late May.  It was delivered
and installed by end of May. I also bought the very nice mount which
locates the camera on the stem of the rear view mirror. This mount has
proven to be very stable and sets the camera high in the windshield out of
obstruction view. It also serves well because it positions the camera high
enough that it improves the field of view for good clarity.

Camera has 120 degrees of view, night vision is quite good, I also ordered
the extra wire harness to cause it to come on with key on. It records to an
SD card at the TV standard of 1080. I have it set to record in 5 min
segments. Once the SD card is full, it automatically records over the
oldest record.

Total investment, a few dollars over $80.  On 1 June, while traveling at
the speed limit on a two lane road, I was struck from the rear with
sufficient force to drive the car 1,000 ft [with brakes full on post
impact, the car that struck me submarine d under my car and lifted the rear
wheels off the ground until we finally separated, mid wreck]..  The camera
faithfully recorded both the sound of impact [sound quality is quite good]
and my travel before the wreck impact, which was used to establish my speed
was legal, and post impact, the track of the car as it was driven across
opposing traffic lane and into a concrete block wall..

My attorney and my doctors both were given copies of the video record. Both
put them to good use. To say the camera paid for it's self would be an
understatement in the extreme.

If I replace this one, it will be with one that has two cameras, one to
front, one to back, and also with one that has a built in GPS and records
speed and location. I would also likely select a remote mounted hard drive
with large capacity to hold the record, and mount it in trunk out of a
crush area. Video records are now being seized by cops so there are some
legal issues to consider, re your release of anything that could be self
incriminating.

All those added features would be very powerful tools to have at record
post any future incidents [hope there are none, but it's a real world out
there.]

The camera I have is a G1W-CB model made under the name Black Box.  If that
helps anyone..

Back in the 1950s, Walt Disney had a short cartoon feature which showed
exactly this.
