General "Buck" Turgidson
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001715/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: General Ripper
called Strategic Air Command headquarters shortly after he issued the go
code. I have a portion of the transcript of that conversation if you'd
like me to to read it.

President Merkin Muffley
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm634/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: Read it!

General "Buck" Turgidson
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001715/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: Ahem... The Duty
Officer asked General Ripper to confirm the fact that he *had* issued the
go code, and he said, uh, "Yes gentlemen, they are on their way in, and no
one can bring them back. For the sake of our country, and our way of life,
I suggest you get the rest of SAC in after them. Otherwise, we will be
totally destroyed by Red retaliation. Uh, my boys will give you the best
kind of start, 1400 megatons worth, and you sure as hell won't stop them
now, uhuh. Uh, so let's get going, there's no other choice. God willing,
we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health,
through the purity and essence of our natural... fluids. God bless you
all" and he hung up.

General "Buck" Turgidson
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001715/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: Uh, we're, still
trying to figure out the meaning of that last phrase, sir.

President Merkin Muffley
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm634/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: There's nothing to
figure out, General Turgidson. This man is obviously a psychotic.

General "Buck" Turgidson
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001715/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: We-he-ell, uh, I'd
like to hold off judgement on a thing like that, sir, until all the facts
are in.

President Merkin Muffley
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm634/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: General Turgidson!
When you instituted the human reliability tests, you *assured* me there
was *no* possibility of such a thing *ever* occurring!

General "Buck" Turgidson
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001715/?ref_=tt_trv_qu>: Well, I, uh, don't
think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single
slip-up, sir.

I took Strangelove with a large grain of salt, as my Dad liked to point out
procedural stuff in it that would have never happened. Dad did say that the
bomber crews in WWII often wrote on the bombs with chalk, in many cases things
that were not appropriate for family hour (he was a B-29 flight engineer in a
reconnaissance wing, but was stationed with a bomber group.)

It is one of my favorite movies, more so due to it being a Kubrick film and the
dark humor than anything else. And George C. Scott, who was revered in my
household when I was growing up as the representation of a "real man".

2015-11-14 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I got a tour of the "big board" too at one point. The displays were
quite interesting technology. They ran through an attack/launch drill
in real time, which kinda made my skin crawl.

Toured a Looking Glass aircraft that was on alert, they were in touch
with their counterpart orbiting "up north" and I'm sure Wilton had
plenty of conversations with them. They ran through a "go" drill and
weapons release exercise on the aircraft, which was somewhat sobering
too, even after the earlier demo.

After that we got a tour of the NEACP plane. It turned out not to be so
much a tour as they let us on and left us to our devices, which I
thought was kinda interesting in that we did not have baby sitter
following us around saying "DON'T TOUCH THAT!!!" The guards surrounding
it with their weapons at ready kinda got our attention until we showed
all our paypas... I got to sit in the preezy's chair and the
pilot's seat.

Then went to the big transmitter out in the middle of the corn fields
that talks to submarines. That was impressive. A bunch of your
strategic weapons in one go, though no missiles.
