Thanks Dan.

I think the most serious argument against window tint is reduced visibility
at night. SWMBO's current daily driver, the '95 E300, has tinted windows
that make it very hard to see to the sides and rear at night. Often I will
roll down the front windows so that I can see.

I use ATR 20 from Llumar. Here is a spec sheet for the properties:

http://cdn.llumar.com/drupal/llautospecifications_20140715_0.pdf

28% is the max for side windows in Florida, so I go with 20%. If you look on
the chart you can see the levels of transmissivity(?) for the various
wavelengths. I can tell you that from personal experience, there is a
noticeable difference in heat transmission between tinted and untinted glass.
You can feel it on your arm sitting on the door sill.

I’ve had the same tint guy for years, and he is truly an artist. To tint the
350SDL will be about $250, and that’s with a lifetime warranty. It would be
under $200 if the car hadn’t been tinted previously. They charge additional
for removing old tint and cleaning the glass, which can be a real ordeal. The
car still has tint on the rear window, as I wasn’t brave enough to try and
remove it. It’s the cheap nasty purple stuff, too.

All good in theory, and the demos are with new tint. THe problem is
that the she it gets brittle when it ages. what I had to take off was
all shrunken and bubbled in the back of the 124 300TD. Only thing that
would work was scraping off thin ribbons with a razor blade. then
soaking the residue with limonene or B100. I don't remember which I used.

The flaps crap probably is limonene. Does it smell citrus-y? it could
be B100 too. or some majik blend...

Tint removal:
There is a material sold at your local FLAPS which loosens the glue that
holds the tint film on, and softens the tint, so that it can be removed.

I suggest you lift a corner.. spray and peel, and scrape with a razor
blade
in a holder.. Helps to spray the whole window film area which softens
it up

some also..

The film removal stuff helps get rid of all the residual glue and
residue..

Worth the $8 [As I recall ]. One bottle is enough to do whole car.. with
some left over, from my experience.

Got to be careful around here that one does not get ticketed for

Client told me a couple of days ago that he got a ticket while driving

The officer had some sort of "gun" that told him how dark the tint was.
Client was a bit upset as they bought the car used with the tint in

In almost 40 years of living in the desert southwest, I've tried every
tint

available.. none stop the sun enough to do a decent job of "keeping your
car cool".

Some new window films claim to be "UV Block" which might help more than
"tint" .. Also, I presume you drive at night.. night vision is severely
impacted by dark [or light for that matter] window tint. Another
consideration.

My experience indicates, go for the window film that has the highest UV
Block rating, not just dark window.

Be aware that window film is a poly coating that becomes scratched easily,
is impacted by window cleaners, and discolors in about one season of
constant sun exposure.. so plan to replace it annually.

Sun shades for the side windows and windshield will give you greatest
return for investment.. but require effort to put up, take down...

Another survival trick for hot climates is to turn AC on high, and drive
the first block with windows down to evacuate the bubble of hyper heated
air trapped in the interior of the car and the AC vents.. It sounds
counter
intuitive, however it truly speeds up your cooling comfort. It also
reduces

the cooling load on the AC system, by evacuation of the hot air trapped
instead of forcing the AC to recycle it and cool it.

I run with the windows down most of the time in the summer. If it gets
too oppressive, i'll turn on the ac, but leave the windows down until I
feel the cool air. In continuous hot, I use Grant's trick of opening
the windows and sunroof first, then AC, then after the hot is vented,
close up.

It has been in the 90s and humid, and so far, in town I don't miss the

Open your windows about 1 inch when parking in the shade. This allows the
interior to vent. One major cause for very high interior temps is the
complete lack of venting.. radiant sun energy heating is trapped in the
"nearly air tight car" and interior temps here can rise to as much as 160F
in quickly. [Arizona] Every summer here, several dogs die because the
owners were "only going to be a minute shopping". It's harsh enough there
is actually a law that you can break car windows to rescue animals and
children.. and it's treated as "felony child abuse".. for example..

Dark window tint does little to stop UV rays which heat the interior. I
designed and built reflective window shades that quickly fit in the windows
when I park without shade.. lowers interior temps by 40 degrees, on
average, measured with my IR thermometer, with the windows venting the 1
inch.

the sunroof in vent position also helps immensely. Way more than any tint.

The car I got from there had none. I wandered around a big junkyard
there for most of a day. I don't remember seeing a lot of plastic
tint. Perhaps because the ultra high temps in a closed cars melt the
glue and causes the plastic to shrink, sag, wrinkle. I hate the stuff.
it ends in misery always.

Yes, already do that. All four windows opened, sunroof rear popped up,
nice big reflective shade across the windshield.

Which window tint is the best for reducing interior temps, that is the
question

You can buy those roll-up aluminum windshield shades for pretty cheap, I
have a couple. M puts one in her (black) ML windshield and it seems to
help a bit, but it's going to get hot no matter what with the sun baking it.

[MBZ] Window Tinting

2011-02-18 Thread Craig
The window tinting on the front two doors of our '94 E420 is peeling off
and the tinting on the rear window has always been bubbled and creased.

How should I go about getting this repaired? Should I try to do it myself
or go to a window tint installer? If the latter, how do I find a good one?

Thanks,

Craig

Front windows, peel off what you can and then play with solvents (acetone?)
until you find one that takes off the residue.

Back window, you'll have to be careful of the defrost grid or consult a pro.
