Kaleb,
I sent you some file attachments, but neither my email or the files seem to
have made it through to you. If you get them, try the Upgrade Assistant
(original). It was good at finding and showing actual reasons that your PC is
not ready for an upgrade. It was the reason I found out that one of my Vostros
needed a BIOS upgrade first.
And for the other naysayers, I've always upgraded because it keeps all my
settings and I don't have to waste time creating them again. Also, I first
used Macs in the early 90s. They had HD controller problems and other issues.
Yes they had good graphics, but... We all like what we use. I just don't use
odd or non mainstream APPs. Not worth the OS problems they can cause.
Again, good luck,

Are your "browser, email client, pdf viewer, pdf creating, image/photo
editing, vector graphic editing, CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, music
player, video player" all on Linux, or are some of the virtual machines
for that?

If those are on Linux, which programs do you use for them?

Some things I had not heard of before:

In computing, SSHFS (SSH Filesystem) is a filesystem client to mount
and interact with directories and files located on a remote server or
workstation over a normal ssh connection. The client interacts with
the remote file system via the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), a
network protocol providing file access, file transfer, and file
management functionality over any reliable data stream that was
designed as an extension of the Secure Shell protocol (SSH) version
 2.0.

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without
any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel
module to provide the filesystem interface. It is a pass-through
filesystem, not an encrypted block device, which means it is created
on top of an existing filesystem.

Unison is a file-synchronization tool for OSX, Unix, and Windows. It
allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be
stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host),
modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the
changes in each replica to the other.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-07 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

Do you mean "reinstall TO fresh media"?

A new SSD is cheap compared to buying a whole new PC. Maybe his system can
accept two hard drives, so he can keep his existing drive as the data disc.

Agreed on both counts.

I use several different distros of Ubuntu at work for security tools. Rock
solid OS, easy to work with, plays nice with just about everything.

2020-01-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
If I didn't have specialty applications to support I'd run Ubuntu Linux. Its
stable, easy to use, easy to install and comes with a bunch of productivity
stuff built right in.
Kaleb needs to back up his data and reinstall Windows from fresh media. I NEVER
upgrade an OS if I can help it. All you're doing is bringing bits of the old OS
along which at best gives you a mish-mosh of stuff and at worst sets you up for
misery.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-06 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

Just did it, worked perfectly. Nice, I've got win 10 using 64 but and
recognizing all 8 GB RAM. Next is install software and restore date files, etc.

Are you trying a clean install, or upgrade with keeping your files / data etc.?

[MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-06 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,
What was the error code this time? And please look for a log file for more
specifics. I'll bet when you find the cause it is something simple. Do you
have any "strange apps" that Win10 needs to make compatible from Win7? Take
everything out of your startup folder and retry. You might also go to Task
Mgr. and look for any odd services that my be running. We have all added lots
of things to our PCs and hope that Windows will be happy with them. Remember
Win 3 that had all the DLL problems caused by outside vendors and their Apps.
It's always easier to blame MS than to blame ourselves.
Good luck,
Roger

Try this, if you have a spare hard drive so you can keep the old and not
lose your data.

Download the clean installation from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Install a clean version, and when you connect to internet and it asks for
the key, use your Win7 key. Buddy told me that's how he did it, worked
fine.

I'm going to try this with my factory installed win 7 pro key.
