Re: [MBZ] alternator bolt?

2015-01-22 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
Sorry -- I didn't word my request properly --- I have a new MB bolt for
the upper adjustment bolt (with the star) but I need a new lower most
bolt. That's the one I need the size for.

Thanks -

No, it's the rack that that bolt engages to adjust the alternator

 that is in stripped.

I think you do --- but don't know for sure.

Our '82 240D engine, which Kaleb has now, did not have it.

It is interesting it is a 110 part number. I never saw one on a 110
or even a /8, but i did not see under the hood of many /8s and never
owned one. I've only seen the rack and pinion adjuster on 123s. I
suppose it is possible that the last few months of production of 110s
and 111s may have it on. My newest 110 was made in Sept, 1965, and
it has the the thin threaded rod with the clamp nut/bracket.

I know the 110s originally came out with a stamped steel alt mount
and those broke. Mine broke in about 1973 or 4. About a year after
I got the car. I put a generator on from a older car. end of
problems. By the 123, they used the cast iron alt mount, and i've
never seen one of those break in the first 300,000 miles.

The teeth engage in a rack attached to the mounting bracket.
Turning the bolt causing the alternator to pivot - either to
tighten or loosen the belt. Unless the mounting bracket isn't flat
so the teeth don't fully engage, or the teeth are wore off.

I think its only on the pre-'81 cars. At least it lines up that
way on my cars.
