[MBZ] antique Dayton 1500 air compressor rebuild

Finally, yesterday I got fedup with the lack of performance from my $100 air 
compressor.
Dayton model 1500
2 cylinder 2 stage
7 cfm
175 psi
600 rpm
60 gallon tank

I pulled it apart and cleaned, straightened, and re-bent/lengthened the 
springs.  Reassembled it with permatex to replace sections of paper gasket that 
flaked apart.  Spent about 1 hour with it and let it sit overnight for the 
permatex and pipe thread sealer to cure.

Fired it up this afternoon and it filled the tank from 20 to 130 psi in 18 
minutes.  I placed a RPM gague on the compressor, and it's only running about 
400rpm.  Is this about right for a 7cfm compressor?  Or should I take it to 
Grainger and see if they can match the valves and rings?

Luther,

Springs work the way they do because they have very high tensile strength -
they always return back to their original form.

But springs have their fatigue points and bending or stretching a spring
works only because you've gone past that fatigue point. Problem is, by going
past the fatigue point, you've also weakened the spring  it will no longer
hold its shape. The springs may not be or have been the issue with your
compressor but may now be an issue in the future.

With some exception, AC motors are designed to run at a constant speed. If
your compressor is running at 400RPM  the data plate states 600 RPM then I
suspect that someone has replaced the motor or a pulley or both.
