You were doing fine until here. There is _no_ resistance built into
the relay. Each parallel glow plug has a higher resistance than the
series plug. Thus each one operates on 12V, not 2V.

 Same principle (resistance
heating), just a different application. I believe the parallel
plugs get hotter, and they heat up much faster, as anyone with a
manual series GP car will attest.

This is partly because all of the heat is in the pre-chamber rather
than on the toaster wires between plugs. The result is that about
1/3 of the heat generated is wasted outside of the engine.

Jim C. is convinced that if that wasted heat were put into the air
intake there would be little difference between series and parallel
plugs starting ability. I won't argue with him! *grin*

Temperature range, probably not so much glow time. Both types of plugs
draw similar currents, at least in 4-cylinder trim. That means equal
power, which should translate to similar heating performance. (Modulo
some second-order factors.)

This opinion is entirely un-based in fact, which means it meets the
strict qualifications for information found on the internet. I've
always meant to conduct the experiment on the Frankenheap of putting
the toasters inside the intake manifold, but there are some issues
there, obviously.

Barring access to the archives, I'm going to post the question regarding my

Re: [MBZ] Archives and question on glow plugs

2006-10-01 Thread LarryT

Hello Zoltan,
1st - the series Vs parallel question - OK - series is when the GPs are
hooked one after the other, i.e. #1 gets 12V, #2 is supplied by #1 (and has
a voltage loss), #3 is supplied by #2 - again with a voltage drop, and so
on.

The so-called Fast Glow Plugs are wired such that each GP gets power
wwithout going thru another GP. You can tell the difference by the large
metal solid wires going between each GP which is the old or series system.
The solid metal wires have squiggly bends to allow for expansion -- at night
they can be seen glowing red hot.

The newer type sold by Rusty as a kit is around $110 and comes with new
wiring and GP's. The difference is phenomonal. Starts will be *much*
faster.

There's 4 conditions concerning the GP relay and preglow light mentioned in
W124 Bible - preglow light off - during preglow - wither #1 or 2 other
plugs are defective.

preglow on - after engine runs for 1 minute - defective relay -
preglow on constantly - but engine starts normally - relay is sticking in
the ON position -
preglow light off constantly and engine is hard to start or won't start -
glow relay defective or 2 or more GPs defective.

Great info. I'm inclined to ask though, which type did my model come with?
The series or the better type?

I seem to remember that the series type (that depend on eachother to have
voltage - which, by the way, seems like poor design) came on the older
models, and was phased out in favor of plugs that do not rely on eachother
to get voltage (as in somewhat newer models).

I'm assuming that since my 240D is the last year made, it has the newer,
better plug system.

Barring access to the archives, I'm going to post the question regarding my
glow plug light that takes a few seconds to come on after turning the key to
ignition position - and whether this indicates a problem with one (or more)
plugs, or whether it indicates a problem with the relay, or what. And
whether my model has the parallel plugs or the series plugs, and which is
better.

Re: [MBZ] Archives?? Brake Fluid DOT 3 or 4 ??

2006-05-14 Thread Mitch Haley
I'll cast my usual vote for any decent DOT4, alternating with ATE Blue.
That way, if you do the right thing and change the fluid before it changes
color,
you can tell the difference between the old and new fluid.

Re: [MBZ] Archives?? Brake Fluid DOT 3 or 4 ??

2006-05-13 Thread OK Don

IIRC, the 115 300D manual calls for DOT 4. I always gravity bleed mine
(had three of them) - no muss, no fuss --

I gravity bleed vice pump/close valve/release pedal/open valve repeat,
because if the brake fluid hasn't been changed regularly, there probably
is corrosion and crap in the master cylinder, and when you go full
stroke the seals run over that garbage and get torn up, and then you
need a new MC. Faster to pressure bleed if you want to spring for the
tool or make your own.

[MBZ] Archives?? Brake Fluid DOT 3 or 4 ??

2006-05-12 Thread R A Bennell
So remind me, are there searchable archives on this list??

I remember a thread or 2 related to brake fluid and DOT 3 vs 4 etc not too long
back.

One of the jobs that I should do this spring is to change the brake fluid in my
76 115 300D. I'm thinking just to
stick with DOT3 which is what I assume it likely has in it. If I siphon (turkey
baster) off what I can and then
refill and bleed each wheel and refill etc., I should be good to go (or stop)
for a year or two at least.

[MBZ] archives

2006-03-30 Thread dieselbenz24
I wonder if there is a way to search *these* emails as before with a search
archive form ? If not that would be a very handy enhancement.

sure is, if you go to the list page and go to the archives, you can
download the entire archive archive for a month and then search away
with your text reader program.

So does Gmail. This list is the only thing I use it for... works great!
