1. Yes, the belts (Continental) were ordered from Rusty.
2. They were ordered and dinstalled at different times.

Exactly! You have to specify a matched set at FLAPS, although most
of the jockeys have no idea what a matched set is. Your friendly
local tractor or industrial engine dealer (or bearing/industrial
supply) would be a better choice if you don't want to give the
business to Rusty..

We used to run a machine with one pair of matched belts and another
set of 10 matched belts. I had to be very particular about the set
of 10.

American made belts when I ran a parts depot years ago, were highly
variable in a given size. THese were mostly B- belts, not
automotive. For MBs, I always order from a stealer or Rusty, because
the european made belts last longer and are the exact fit.

Many years ago when I worked at an auto supply store you could buy belts (we
carried mostly the Gates brand) in a matched set. Surely these are what
Rusty has available.

Isn't this why we're supposed to buy the dual belts from Rusty, because

they are more consistent and match each other?

Anyone else come across this? TIA.

Yep. Our 450SL did this. Harmless, IMHO.

Belts should not stretch much. They probably do to a very small degree
but they are not really supposed to.

If I had four belts on hand, I would have been looking to start mixing and
matching when I started to tension the first set and it was uneven.

[MBZ] belts installation oddity

2011-03-31 Thread glenn brown

I recently installed new fan/drive belts on my '85 300TD & '84 300D and, other
than the belt for the AC compressor being rather difficult to get on the
pulleys, I noticed somewhat of an oddity with the two belts which go to the
alternator and H2O pump in that they were slightly different lengths as there's
~ 3/4-1" play in the one belt whereas the other is hardly compressable with the
index finger. The same observation on both cars and, since this was really not
a fun job, I am not thinking of changing them to mix/match the lengths of these
belts. I'm hoping that the tighter belt may stretch some and perhaps be a
better match in tautness with its mate. Anyone else come across this? TIA.
