Well I thought I'd have a quick job of changing my brake pads this
afternoon.  On the passenger rear brake the inboard piston is siezed in
the caliper.

So just to get this done before Monday, I'm tempted to try AutoZone or
Pep Boys tomorrow to see if they have one.  The one on there now is one
I ordered from Rusty, and it lasted less than two years so I'm sorta
thinking a rebuilt caliper is a rebuilt caliper, does it matter much
where I get it?

Well nobody who's open today has a caliper in stock. So looks like I'll
be calling Rusty on Monday.

The drivers side caliper was OK.

The rotors were in terrible shape. I had ordered new ones because I
could see through the gaps in the wheels that they were starting to get
uneven and I could feel puslations in the braking when I stopped. When
I got them off the back side was nearly gone! The smooth surface was
coming off in chunks... looks like rust migrated in from the outside
edge. No wonder my brakes were feeling rough.

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
Depends on why it's stuck. If the piston is cocked in the bore, you
can usually persuade it to come out, then you need a rebuild kit.

Otherwise, yeah, they are all pretty much the same.

Change the rotor -- I suspect the piston is stuck because the rotor
is too thin and the backing plate on the pad will contact the anti-
rattle spring on the top. This forces the piston to cock in the
bore, drag, and roast the rubber parts.

Push the piston in and then use the brake pedal to push it out again.
Exercise it a bit and you might be fine, or, as Peter said, it might
be cocked. I would try the exercise bit before I spend more dollars
for a rebuilt.

Have not been able to get it to move either way using a C-clamp to try
to squeeze it in and brake pedal (with the other piston clamped) to try
to push it out.

(unless you purge and flush all and do the Dot5 switch, but that
starts a discussion much the same as oil.) In that case, no Dot 3
anyway. Best to only buy dot 4. It works in DO3 systems, but not vice versa.
