2014-11-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I am curious.
How much work has been done on it over time?

I sold a boat to a fellow who picked it up with a Chevy or GMC pickup
truck with a diesel that had about 800,000 Kil on it so about 500,000
miles but he acknowledged that it had had a lot of work over the years.
I communicated with him a while later and learned that he had retired it
when the transmission gave up some time later.

Re: [MBZ] hi miles

2014-11-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I might be toward the other end of that scale.

My 76 115 300D showed 990 miles on the odometer when I bought it in July
of 2005.
I have no way of knowing if that was just the beginning of the 2nd time
around or not but the car is tight and I would not be surprised if it was.

I know some of its history but only via what the seller told me.
It was purchased locally be an MD who kept it a long while.
He gave up trying to drive it in the winter and ended up storing it with
his barber who lived in an apartment building with underground parking.
He kept it in the underground parking in the winters when it was not
being used.
Ultimately, the barber acquired the car from the MD and I am told the
barber kept it a long while.
The fellow I got it from bought it from the barber. By then there was
some rust and he had some repairs done and had it painted.
He had it a few years but really did not use it and when I happened to
see it in his shop and admire it, he offered to sell it to me.

It now shows about 14 or 15K miles on the odometer so I have only put
about 13 or 14K miles on it in about 9 years.
I drove it quite a bit this past summer but took no long trips so it was
mostly around town.
One previous summer a year or two back, it sat in the garage pretty well
all summer because the front seats, esp driver, were falling apart and I
took them to an upholstery shop and they did not return them until November.

So that year, it likely only got a hundred or two miles on it.

RB who misses driving the car now that winter has come

my 78 240D can still be driven any time. the only known problem which
might be considered serious is the broken parking pawl in the tranny..
Of course it has the typical rust on the floors and rockers and one hood
hinge has a screw missing. t has 330K mi.

our 91 300D is like new - just got a absolutely perfect oil analysis,
the tranny is perfect, body is even perfect for a 20+ yr old car that is
driven daily as my wife's work car. Dead dependable, 240K miles.

I really need to get some High mileage Badges from MB. I have one for
the 78 240D. but only the 1st.

Na, he wins the /8 prize so far, but the original contest specified
W123. So far Rick has the 123 record for this august (or January)
group

(January because we are having January weather, not August or even November.)

My first 126 had 420k when i let it go.

Current 126 heap had 416k on it when the odo quit long before I
bought it 3 yrs ago. No idea how many miles it has on now.

My 1980s winter heap, a 65 190Dc had over 400k when I bought it and I
put on a bunch more. It was under 500k when it was crushed. (110)

all the other 123, 124, 126 cars have over 200k and under 300k.
Broken in but not high mileage. 110 has around 400k but I can't
document the first 270 or so
