[MBZ] installing belts on '85 300TD

2011-03-22 Thread glenn brown

After finishing the valve stem seals replacement on my '85 300TD, I noticed
some considerable cracking on the interior of the fan/drive belts and decided
to replace 'em . . . stupid move, as there must be some magic behind being able
to move the AC compressor enough to remove this drive belt. Anyone BTDT? TIA.

Do you have a service manual?

As I recall, there are three holddown bolts and one that rotates
the compressor on the mount. That is, turning the bolt actually
moves the compressor and changes the tension.

I ended up using a large round screwdriver to lever the belts over pulleys.

If it's the same as the 83 then loosen the three big bolts (19mm
wrench). Then unscrew the tension bolt with a deep 10mm socket.
Worked good for me. Just did that a week or so ago.

Removing the old belt is easy: just cut it with aviation shears or something
like that. The trick is then getting the new one on.

On my '83 300D, not only was the AC belt quite a tight fit to get on, I
also had a difficult time geting it tensioned properly: it starts
flopping around after a few weeks. Since my AC doesn't hold a charge
anyway, I'm currently running beltless on the AC compressor.

Two bolts on the front, one on the rear, and the pivot bolt if it's
like the one on the W115s. Might be different, but make SURE you
have all of them loose or it won't move.

They can be hard to get to.
