Re: [MBZ] no talent required, apparently

So the talents of the artists and the compositions were irrelevant, he
thought? Crosby, Sinatra, Fitzgerald and all the rest just showed up for
 the money,
 then.

No, but the mastering is another piece of the puzzle. I've found that a
lot of Sinatra's stuff is not as well recorded as Tony Bennett's although
Tony likes a lot of reverb on his vocals and Frank's are usually almost dry.
(no effects)

Ella always had her Norman (Granz) to make things just so.

Bing Crosby was very well recorded in the 40 onwards. He was a pioneer in
the multitrack recording method as well as tape recording. Later he put the
money up for Ampex to produce the first videotape! I recently bought a
couple of old albums by Binger and they were phenomenally well recorded! I
was impressed.

OTOH, the first Zeppelin album has so much distortion in John Paul Jones'
bass that it drives me mad. Levels were just way too high.

Reminds me of an article I read several years ago, a guy had analyzed the
sonic characteristics of popular music hits that have remained popular for
decades, and found a direct correlation to the amount of dynamic range
preserved
in the mastering.

So the talents of the artists and the compositions were irrelevant, he
