Re: [MBZ] removing tank screen

Kaleb -
When I pulled the screen on my '81 SD I used my 12 channel locks. Mine
wasn't really that tight.

After removing the big line from the tank (this is a gas 126), I assume
you just unscrew the big fitting for the tank screen? What I need to
know, what size socket do you need to remove the tank screen?

 I haven't tried a 126, but the 107 took a 1 13/16 socket. I took the

hadto grind down the outside diameter to get it into the hole - the
screem was off-center in the hole in the bottom of the trunk, and
wouldn't let the socket get on square enough to turn the screen.

For a 123,

The sender (on top of the tank, accessable by removing the first aid
kit) and the strainer (accessable from under the car) both measure
1.804 across the flats. This is 45.82mm and implies one would use a
46mm (1.811) or 1 13/16 (1.813) socket.

I actually looked it up in a Whitworth table. 1 W is 1.670, 1 1/8 is 1.860,
so it looks like the choices you gave are better. The acceptable measure across
the flats for a 1 1/8 Whitworth bolt is 1.815 to 1.860, so there's considerable
leeway on large fasteners, I doubt .01 loose is a problem.

Thanks, but we are talking about the screen in the bottom of the tank.
Seems like I bought a socket to remove the sender, wonder if its the
same size.

That is a large range. I'd hate to try it with a 12-point socket, but a
6-point should be OK. An adjustable spanner would be the best.

Ummm - that's what Craig said - on the 123, both are the same size.
They are the same in the 107, FWIW.
