I parked my 85 td on the street a mile from that safeway for about five
years. No notes, but someone did steal the hood ornament one time if that
counts.

There was always a dark blue 87 td on Benton i thought about leaving notes
on.

That condo is for sale if anyone is looking for a pied a terre.

2015-04-09 Thread Curly McLain
When I was a kid my Dad had a customer who ran a very successful
commune in southern Indiana called Pandanaram. I used to visit
their when he called on them in the summer time. Daniel Wright was
the head of the place, which formed a company that had a large,
automated pallet mill and also ran a lumber business with standing
timber.

I believe there are still vestiges of the business around.

They had a big communal hall where everyone ate, separate dorms for
unmarried men/women, and smaller cottages for families. Everything
was free, so to speak, as long as you were a contributing member.
This meant you performed some sort of job, whether it be labor in
the mill or domestic chores of some sort. They had a small school on
site where the children were educated.

No religious doctrine or stuff like that, just some sort of
grounding in Christianity from what recall. No mandatory
participation in services, but you were expected to be respectful.
People could come and go as they wished, so it seemed like there was
regular turnover as people came and went over time.

Daniel invited me to spend the summer there on more than one
occasion. What I saw was pretty alien to me at the time, so I
passed. Not sure if my Dad would have let me stay there, either, but
the subject never came up...

Dan

But it, like all other socialist experiments it failed.

The first yurpeens on what is now the USA tried a socialist
experiment. It failed QUICKLY. Every one since has failed. Some,
like the Amana Colonies manages to last more than 50 years, but they
fail every time.

Socialism fails every time, communism fails every time. Some just
fail faster, and others uses guns and fear to prolong the experiment.
How come east germany had to build a wall to keep people inside the
utopian paradise?

Wasn't that the W124? The W116, W123, and W126 all have a similar
front suspension, and it is NOT a McPherson strut.

The strut is actually a very nice suspension, eaiser to make, easier
to maintain, and if intelligently designed, provides very good
handling. It provides zero or negative offset without the expensive
cast components used in the earlier zero offset designs.

Peter

Thanks Peter. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how
a 123 front is called a mcpherson strut. The 124 is for sure. I
think the definition of a mcpherson strut is the spring around the
shock as a load bearing component, where earlier systems in MB had a
mostly non-load bearing shock, (bears weight in the lb it takes to
compress the gas pressure shock.) and a coil spring between the UCA
or body and the LCA.

REF: according to misiam-webster:

Definition of MACPHERSON STRUT
: a component of an automobile suspension consisting of a shock
absorber mounted within a coil spring

OK, I was wrong, the 116, 123, and 126 do not have a McPherson strut. I've
been calling them that for years now. Either way, they do not have double
wish bone front suspensions, which I think is the proper way to control the
front wheels.

On Fri, Apr 3, 2015 at 5:15 PM, Curly McLain 126die...@gmail.com wrote:

Thanks Peter. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how a
123 front is called a mcpherson strut. The 124 is for sure. I think the
definition of a mcpherson strut is the spring around the shock as a load
bearing component, where earlier systems in MB had a mostly non-load
bearing shock, (bears weight in the lb it takes to compress the gas
pressure shock.) and a coil spring between the UCA or body and the LCA.

 REF: according to misiam-webster:

 Definition of MACPHERSON STRUT
: a component of an automobile suspension consisting of a shock absorber
 mounted within a coil spring

Both the 114/115 and the 124 handle/drive better than the 123. It was a low

there really is something sweet about old diesels in this regard. one thing
you can be sure about any old neglected gasser is that it will be full of
ignition issues. and any marginal but functional ignition will leave you
stranded once it rains on an old car.

once it is lit and warm, the old diesels just keep on firing fine. my old
decrepit wagon is leaking everything out of everywhere and is mostly
trashed, but just keep firing perfectly.

He used the 5sp from the 16v, with a custom double plate clutch, 457hp.
1/4 mile in the mid 13s is very good for a turbo diesel with stick shift
and traction problems. I want to do a mild replica of that car, I already
have a OM 602 turbo engine (5/6 of an OM603) and a pearl black 2.3-16v.
I just bought a variable nozzle turbo from a 2005 E320CDI, my Finnish
friends tell me the VNT turbo can handle 250hp, and one of them has a 331hp
OM602, so I think 250 should be possible.
Jorma now has a 124 coupe with the newer 24v OM606, over 500hp. I'll be happy
if I can run with an E320CDI (0-60 in 6.8, 40mpg hwy). My 2.3-16 can do 0-60
in 7.3 seconds and get 23mpg hwy.

A W123 in motion is always a sweet sight to me, but seeing one kick out on
dry pavement with that kind of power is admittedly extra delicious!

Didn't that one have a license plate and trailer hitch? I think it's a daily
driver. Jorma's converted 16v didn't have a plate at the May 5 drags in the
video.

No, but will TRY to download it and see it (computer allowing) when I get
back from the store tonight. I thought the Finns wern't allowed to mod
thier cars due to regulations. This is based on a segment of video (I am
reviewing right as I type) of a Finnish immigrant named Antti Rahko, who
retired in America to be allowed to mod his RV's. OK they just said
verbatum In Finland most of the things are prohibited with cars, rebuilding
cars, and where in the States most of the things are legal and not
prohibited. (He was a mechanical engineer, who doesn't speak English)

It's an interesting 5 minute segment about his Custom RV (complete with full
working sauna trailer) and his monster crazy 300TDt, which is a tri-axle
franken marvel made from two bodies, I'm sure someone had seen it.

Thanks for the tip. I think Finland has a W123 club...

Vince, have you seen what those crazy Finns do to 123s?
For instance, if you take time to download this video,
you will see one with an OM606 (3.0L 24V diesel) lay
an incredible amount of rubber down before the driver
(rehtijii) figured out he couldn't just floor it from a
standing start. He did a 13.9 1/4 mile with less wheelspin
on his next run.

(from the factory) power rating. (but that can't be right, I've seen
200d with OM606 under the hood, that's about double the facrory power)
Maybe nobody pays attention to diesel swaps yet?
I'm thinking that once an engine is allowed in a car, what the government

Europe tends to have higher regs and more taxes for older cars, which makes
me glad to be a car enthusiast guy here. Cool video, Finns having fun
definately. I think it's neat there is an apparent USA car enthusiasm
group, odd to realize Chevys and such are exoctic to them, but very cool.

Did I really see that W201 diesel beat that Vette? THAT'S somethin'!

A W123 in motion is always a sweet sight to me, but seeing one kick out on
dry pavement with that kind of power is admittedly extra delicious!

Thanks again for pointing that out to me.

Think about this. In Germany there are no Junkyards. Older cars that do not
pass the inspection (TUeV), which includes body, suspension, oil
leaks and emissions, and can not repaired at reasonable cost are being
scrapped, I mean shredded, and the owner pays a fee.

[MBZ] Official CLub 123D Info

2005-12-30 Thread V Layton

Hello to all the Mercedes fans here at Striplin.net!

This is my first post here and I'm sorry it took me awhile to contribute,
I'm kind of a one track person with precious little time these days (which
is good, I guess!) but now I've found some time I can concentrate on geting
used to this list. I think I must be spoiled by forum mode setups? Maybe I
haven't figured out all the features yet- like how to log-in to read all the
threads-

Anyways, I wanted to answer some questions about my auto club for W123
chassis cars, to clear up some of the points I read.

THE LIMO: The limo finally sold today for $600! It was bought by a member
of my club, hopefully it will get some design updates and all the mechanical
restoration it needs!

CLUB 123D: I'm an eccentric, molded as a freak of nature and fate which has
called me to pursue a fantastic vision of the ultimate positive and
preservative resource for the long term enjoyment of my favorite car ever,
the W123 chassis. I want every classic American ideal for automotive
enthusiasm provided by a single resource. In a land where there is a nut
and/or a group following for every kind of car practiacally made, and often
fine European cars are snubbed and misunderstood, I wanted to see all the
fun and celebration of car hobbyists presented to the W123 owner, and maybe
then some. I'm trying to make these services availible to the W123
enthusiast:

A national registry

A club newsletter

Hall of historical records, information, literature- of MB, W123, W123 era
related technological developemts and of Club 123D itself

Novelties, art, Club memorabilia - (shirts - decal logos, grille badges)

An Annual car show

A technical gathering event

A social gathering event

2 annual road rally tours, of varying grades of difficulty and endurance

Member rated maintenance, repair and restoration services

logistical services

personal assistance, advice, negotiaion and PPI services for transfer of
ownership

It's traditional in the sense it has memberships, with fees, little cards,
and a periodical. It's not so traditional in that is offers all the
traditional things but also can serve as funtioning mechanical facility.

It's quite a unigue approach, I've narrowed out all other cars EXCEPT ANY
W123 chassis- there is a certain uniformity I enjoy. I like many other
kinds of MB's but I specialize in W123- completely and exclusively.

It's not going to be for or liked by everybody, but if I can keep up my
approach of behaving in an opposite way of a certain unpopular MB part
supplier, the general concensus will really appreciate what it is for what
it is and I hope this club will be a noteworthy effort for encouraging W123
preservation and enthusuasm. I appreciate anyone's support.

THE CAR SHOW: I'm sorry it wasn't clear enough that popular vote
categories would not be simply my will So I'm a little big on
disclaimers, I try to cut off obviois questions and concerns and
exploitative ideas with them. It's the very first show. There is no
clamoring for a W123 show, but as for what I'm trying to do, I have to MAKE
one. Humble, humble beginnings, folks. Like the first Spring tour: Nobody
had the idea I ever met or talked to so I created it because I wanted it. I
worked up the whole thing with some assistance in the event operation. FOUR
people particiapated, I was only up to 11 members at the time. But it was
real and then I had photos and experience of the event relayed from the
members who were on it to have the 9 particiapnts in 2005, we were at member
30 at that time. Currently we stand at 40, and I would not be surprised to
be at 50 members and 15 particiapants for the May 2006 event. That's how
the show will work, I just put it out on the table and try to get as many
people to come as I can, then I will have photos and results and they will
encourage others not to miss the next one! (I hope, of course)

MY WEBSITE: It's a little galleryish- I actually want it to be this way.
The home page photos are all actual member registered cars, no duplicaes,
and not all there yet. The membership fee is not just to get your car's
photo on my hallowed page that would be a rip, it's one of the lower
automatic perks of the Club membership. The website, while free and
visible to all, is supposed to be a perk for Club members, and they are
supporting it, as well as the club's existence. I understand if someone
doesn't just want to make a public television-like donation with their
paid membership, but it can certainly be thought of that way.

Also, it may look amatuerish, because it is! I am the web ignorant doofus
registar dot com thrives on, and I, knowing nothing the day prior to the
purchase 10-15-05, that's what I managed to get up as some kind of internet
represenataive for my club with all their included, consumer grade tools-
but it got me on e the air and is suitable for my needs.

Hello to all the Mercedes fans here at Striplin.net!

This is my first post here and I'm sorry it took me awhile to
 contribute,
I'm kind of a one track person with precious little time these days
 (which
is good, I guess!) but now I've found some time I can concentrate on
 geting
used to this list. I think I must be spoiled by forum mode
 setups? Maybe I
haven't figured out all the features yet- like how to log-in to read all
 the
  threads-

Anyways, I wanted to answer some questions about my auto club for W123
chassis cars, to clear up some of the points I read.

THE LIMO: The limo finally sold today for $600! It was bought by a
 member
of my club, hopefully it will get some design updates and all the
 mechanical
  restoration it needs!

CLUB 123D: I'm an eccentric, molded as a freak of nature and fate which
 has
called me to pursue a fantastic vision of the ultimate positive and
preservative resource for the long term enjoyment of my favorite car
 ever,
the W123 chassis. I want every classic American ideal for automotive
enthusiasm provided by a single resource. In a land where there is a
 nut
and/or a group following for every kind of car practiacally made, and
 often
fine European cars are snubbed and misunderstood, I wanted to see all
 the
fun and celebration of car hobbyists presented to the W123 owner, and
 maybe
then some. I'm trying to make these services availible to the W123
  enthusiast:

  A national registry

  A club newsletter

Hall of historical records, information, literature- of MB, W123, W123
 era
related technological developemts and of Club 123D itself

Novelties, art, Club memorabilia - (shirts - decal logos, grille
 badges)

  An Annual car show

  A technical gathering event

  A social gathering event

2 annual road rally tours, of varying grades of difficulty and
 endurance

Member rated maintenance, repair and restoration services

  logistical services

personal assistance, advice, negotiaion and PPI services for transfer of
  ownership

It's traditional in the sense it has memberships, with fees, little
 cards,
and a periodical. It's not so traditional in that is offers all the
traditional things but also can serve as funtioning mechanical facility.

It's quite a unigue approach, I've narrowed out all other cars EXCEPT
 ANY
W123 chassis- there is a certain uniformity I enjoy. I like many other
kinds of MB's but I specialize in W123- completely and exclusively.

It's not going to be for or liked by everybody, but if I can keep up my
approach of behaving in an opposite way of a certain unpopular MB part
supplier, the general concensus will really appreciate what it is for
 what
it is and I hope this club will be a noteworthy effort for encouraging
 W123
preservation and enthusuasm.

There is no
clamoring for a W123 show, but as for what I'm trying to do, I have to
 MAKE
one. Humble, humble beginnings, folks. Like the first Spring
 tour: Nobody
had the idea I ever met or talked to so I created it because I wanted
 it. I
worked up the whole thing with some assistance in the event
 operation. FOUR
people particiapated, I was only up to 11 members at the time. But it
 was
real and then I had photos and experience of the event relayed from the
members who were on it to have the 9 particiapnts in 2005, we were at
 member
30 at that time. Currently we stand at 40, and I would not be surprised
 to
be at 50 members and 15 particiapants for the May 2006 event. That's
 how
the show will work, I just put it out on the table and try to get as
 many
people to come as I can, then I will have photos and results and they
 will
encourage others not to miss the next one! (I hope, of course)

MY WEBSITE: It's a little galleryish- I actually want it to be this
 way.
The home page photos are all actual member registered cars, no
 duplicaes,
and not all there yet.

I am the web ignorant
