Chances of finding someone who knows anything on the phone are
vanishingly small. I might be over that way this week sometime, I'll
ask them what the deal is with the car. If you want to send me your
phone # I can give you a ring from the yard, let you know what the deal
is and how much, etc.

--R (I tried to send this to you directly but it wouldn't go up to the
mail server for some reason.

2009-03-30 Thread Rich Thomas
Yeah there were some there /i think. I took some pics with my phone
camera, later on I will get them transferred over and send one along.
There was at least one blue 300D, I did not look inside closely but I
think it was blue. One or two others silver or blue or both.

I could go by there, calling them would be worse than useless as they
are kinda clueless. Don't ask why.

I believe Wilton used to disassemble and reassemble jet bombers in the

IIRC, shop labor on that job is something like $1500-2000, if you find a
mechanic who's willing to do it. It takes a looong time. The good news is that
you can easily replace all the vacuum actuators in the heating system while
you've got the heater box out of the car.

(Like I said in my first post, check the service records and see if the evap has
already been replaced, a car with a new evap is probably worth $1000 more than a
car with a good original evap)

Re: [MBZ] value 300D

2009-03-28 Thread Loren Faeth
In the factory, they put a bare chassis on the rack, then bolt on the
evaporator, then build the car around it. Unfortunately, the evaps
are made of dis-similar metals, and so generate leaks. The only cure
is to do without AC or to do an evapectomy.

The only ways I can think of to check the evap are to look at the service
records (it's been replaced, or you'll probably have to replace it in the next
few years), or have an A/C shop stick a freon sniffer in a cold air vent in the

If the system is low on freon, just assume it's going to be costly.

Re: [MBZ] value 300D

2009-03-27 Thread Rich Thomas
I was at a junkyard today stripping a 300SD, and they had one of those
300D 2.5T, doors gone but in pretty good shape otherwise, nice interior,
185k on the clock, engine still there, not sure why it was junked.

The paint and interiors on mine are good. I'd guess between $3,000 and
$5,000, but might be lower now. Depends on what you'll offer, and what they
will accept.

Check the alignment of the belt tensioner and idler pulley, AC evaporator,
and how it runs/drives in general. Records?
