I recently resurrected an '83 300D that is nearly as clean as that one
(minus all the used car spray'n'shine). 148k miles and not a single
scratch, dent, or speck of rust; just a couple of small rock chips.
99th percentile inside and out as if it has been held in stasis since
the Wall came down.

The procedure was simple: Check oil, install a battery, turn key. It
started instantly and immediately settled into a perfectly smooth idle.
A sticker on the door jamb stated that the oil had been changed at the
dealer 100 miles ago - in 1993. The brakes, wiper blades, ACC (save for
the depleted R12) were all as they should be. Thirteen-year-old diesel
fuel. Huh. The car has been in regular service for a month now and is
a joy to drive once I cleaned the boost line and adjusted the ALDA and
bowden cable.  It likes to go sideways in corners in the rain, though;
the old Michelin XAS tires are as hard as rocks.

It is difficult for us old jalopy drivers to imagine how nice these cars
were when they were new. And how expensive.

There's always the classic little old lady car. An elderly person
buys a car, drives it around town for a few years, then it gets sold
when they either die or give up driving. Cars like that are often in
almost pristine condition inside, and low mileage, but the miles will be
mostly city driving. My mom worked at a managed care facility and the
resident lot was full of relatively well-preserved older cars.

Auburn, WA. I'm asking $800 as a starting point but I'll accept any
reasonable offer. Here's the Craigslist post:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/160555492.html

It was my daily driver until the left engine mount finally collapsed
last week and made it rather painful to drive. I don't really want to
deal with trying to replace the mount myself right now, and I know
Auburn Foreign Car will charge me more than I want to put into it to do
the job for me. To be honest, the state of the body is such that this
might be best as a running parts car.

Not for me, but my fundage... That car _would_ cure my 240D

rust-free 300D of ours. And the tires onto the Frankenheap...

Sigh.

It sold this morning, at any rate, to a guy who needs parts for a 300TD.
I am now Benzless, and I bought one of those 'merican cars to replace
it. (Sacrilage, I know!) I'll probably own another some day.

It looks like this guy restores vehicles. There is a section of his ebay
page that shows several other vehicles for sale. All of them that I looked
at are also immaculate. And the old Caddie is admittedly restored (and he's
asking some $50k).

I would say that even if the SD in question truly did have such low miles,
it has been - if not restored - at least detailed extensively. The condition
of the various parts indicate that they have been either meticulously
maintained, or replaced/refurbished.

If it has not been restored, Lynn's question is begged: Where did he get it.
I'll add: How? Why would someone maintain a vehicle such, then let it go?
Death?
