I loved my 1970 280S. A really basic car, but it had an understated panache that made it nice. Getting the Zeniths working is a the easy part - I think Jaime and I are the only Zenith advocates still around. Barn finds are good because they have skipped the first (and maybe second and third) restoration phase, when the car has a low value, and repairs/repaint are not done right. After sitting in a barn for a few decades, someone has a chance to do a proper restoration and have a nice unadulterated car. THAT is why people get excited about barn finds. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] '68 250S
I was going to have it painted this year as there has been body work done to the front of the car. It was a horrible re-spray (water in lines), and it doesn’t quite match the rest of the car. The original paint is badly checked, so to do a complete strip and re paint is about $6500. I think I’ll live with it the way it is. Re: [MBZ] '68 250S - '69 280SE Parts Compatibility
A lot of parts will be the same and a lot won't. The list would be large to say at once. The best thing to do is call or email on each part you want to swap when you are ready and I can tell you then if they will work. It's a good solid car with little or no rust in all of the usual suspect places. Original paint all around, and I had no problem with the magnet sticking everywhere. I had it on a reliable source that the car ran great for about 3 weeks after the PO spent $900 on carb work (saw receipt) before it returned to its somnolent state. Upon removing the carb cover, all we could smell was varnish, and the PO has told me that he did not do anything to the tank or lines. Hmmm, I think we figured this one out. While working through this, I happened, by chance , to come across a '69 280SE with a seized engine. The body is pretty good (not as good as the 250S), but the interior trim pieces on the doors and dash are all better. I am thinking this could become a donor car for the 250S, but am concerned about the compatibility of the parts, i.e: fuel tank lines, suspension parts, AC parts, steering pump, etc. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Re: [MBZ] '68 250S - '69 280SE Parts Compatibility
Should make a good parts car. Different engine, but most other parts are most likely interchangeable. Fuel tank should be the same. Suspension should be generally the same, but springs are probably a little different strength. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I bought a '68 250S with carb issues.
