Re: [MBZ] 119 timing chain issues, update
Well I got it back, its pretty beat up. Its the same color (black) as the one with the broken valve cover. Both the fenders are shot, the interior is shot, dont know what all works and what doesnt yet. No key, no title, front bumper is also fubar. The tumbler is out of the ignition so it can be started with a screw driver. Not sure how the steering lock on those works, even though I could turn it, the steering would not unlock. I also need to figure out a way to backfeed power into the system so I can try and use the central locking to unlock the truck where the battery is. Thinking I can do that thru the cig lighter somehow. Kevin Kraly wrote: I guess you have a TOUGH decision to make. which one would be the best driver? Yup. Like Hans says, what was wrong with using a wear ring that was easy to replace? I guess somebody thought the hub would last long enough -- so now when you have to replace it the second time (replacement seals are offset to the rear 5 mm), you get to replace a $300 hub instead of a $30 wear ring Peter On Jan 12, 2009, at 6:33 PM, Mitch Haley wrote: Peter Frederick wrote: Can't turn it inside out, the boss comes off and you push it into the seal going back in. Re: [MBZ] 119 timing chain issues, update
Timing chain issues! Visited my buddy Hans (the supplier of choice for all things Mercedes, along with tool lending and expert advice!) and he was working (still) on the 560 that came in for a water pump replacement before Xmas. Because of family stuff, it sat for a few days before he got to work on it, and when he started it, the timing chain was slapping loud enough to hear inside the car VERY clearly. He instantly shut it off (no desire to do a free valve job, I expect), pushed the car down the slope into the garage, and check the timing. Timing was OK, if barely, but when he tried to rotate the engine using the crank bolt it locked up! Solid, no turn. Back it up and he hears a couple clicks each time he pulls, and when he went to show my brother who had stopped in to pick up parts, the stinking thing rotated normally! New top guides, which made him suspicious, so he decides the chain is worn and goes to replace it. Ha, quite the battle on an engine that supposedly has only 60,000 miles on it. He's working by himself with one of those tools that holds the chain on the cam sprocket so one person can change one. This one keeps hopping off the crank gear so he has to stop and adjust the cam timing to keep the engine turning! Since he was concerned about the chain, he'd hung the new one up and marked the length on the wall, and when he got the old one out, compared them . Old one is 16mm longer than the new one So now the fun starts! New chain still barely in, so he takes the front cover off to change the lower chain guides. Sure enough, they have DEEP slots worn in them. Breaks the long bolt on the thermostat housing too, takes an hour of messing around to get the remains of it out, corroded something terrible. In 60,000 miles with regular maintenance? So now it's all back together, but when you run the engine up to 2000 rpm or so, it leaks oil like crazy. Hans used that expanding sealant that costs $40 a tube to seal the top of the front cover (remember, on an M117,the heads sit on the cover, and there is literally no way to replace the gasket without taking the heads off). Not a drop of oil from the top, but a river out of the crankshaft seal he just replaced. Nothing like fun, eh? I think I need a new oil filler cap (collecting oil in the recess again -- or maybe an new blow-by hose fitting) so I'll be getting an update soon. Hans is peeved, he's got other cars lined up to work on (he's semi-retired) and this one is sitting on the lift immobile. I've got a feeling the engine was replaced with a used one somewhere that the PO didn't know about -- I cannot imagine that a chain in an M117 got that worn with regular oil changes (most of which Hans has done). I guess you have a TOUGH decision to make. which one would be the best driver? Do you swap parts onto the one with the good engine, or swap engines?
