If they need it. If they don't have any cracks or obvious damage, why bother?
After all, this is a bottom feeder car, right? You should even reuse the bolts
and just out som LocTite on them when reassembling.

and if the driveshaft has never been out, the splines are so stiff/rusty

Dude you slide the shaft back to get the flex disk out, so it's for
quite a bit of lateral movement
except that really does not happen. this is not a f150 where the Diff
flops up, down and sideways and the splines have to slide. The trans

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-09 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I did tighten one once after re-assembling it, but that was jsut to try it.
I could not tell any difference. They all just slid apart, which makes it
mush easier to drop the shaft when replacing the flex disks.

Either Herman the German never tightened them from the factory or when being
worked on at dealers early in their life they never got tightened.

I am well aware of that. I am simply saying on the hundreds of cars I have

I did not have to mess with that nut when I worked on our '82 240D/3.0
either, but Dan is right, the nut is supposed to be tightened. There is a
picture in the shop manual with two very-long-handled wrenches turning it.

This is for a W126, but the process is the same for all. See this for the
procedure. Make note of step #18:

http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD2/Program/Chassis/41-050.pdf#page=29

30-40 Nm to tighten.

Then someone didn’t tighten the nut when they were done. It’s supposed to be

No offense to Curley but he has lost his mind on this one. It would have to be
very very lucky for the shaft to somehow stay connected to the trans when the
disk lets go. This is what usually happens

The knuckles should be separated by the 15mm or so thick rubber disk.
However, that disk has steel bushings that the bolts go through that are
probably still bolted securely to the knuckles. They could connect and
drive the car. I remember a centering pin at the rear of the drive shaft,
can't remember if there is one at the tranny end or not, but suspect that
there is - this would also keep the shaft aligned so the knuckles could
drive the car.
All that is from my faulty memory from replacing way too many flex
disks in

the distant past . . .

There are centering bushings on both ends. These and the projecting bolts out
of the “Y” yoke/flange on both sides would probably bang together, essentially
“pushing” the drive train at that point.

I could see it happening, but man, would that be nasty.

That's not even possible. The trans bolts to the disk which is then bolted to
the shaft. If the disk lets go there is nothing attaching. I don't see how it
would stay together. You should not need to limp it home because of all the
noise it would make for many many miles before it actually broke.

It doesn't. If it's a flex disk then the tranny is fine. If the flex disk is
fine then the front pump is not providing pressure to the tranny.

Sheared flex disc means that Park would not hold the car in place. I had a
tranny that sheared the drive ears that mate with the torque converter. It

site shows the 722.351 being used by 1990-1991 300SELs.

germanstar.com shows the 722.319 being used by 1986-1991 300SELs.

Arthur Dalton posted some info on 722.3xx and 722.4xx transmissions in the

722.3/4 trans start gear [ 1st/2nd ?]

I know how to locate my transmission # and knowing which 722.3xx I have isn't the

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That's what the guy selling it said, it just quit working one day.
Belonged to his step father or something, this kid was going to fix it
but it has been sitting for 4-5 years, I got it for $200, it is actually
a pretty nice car, needs a bit of cleaning. I gotta put the new fuel
filter on it, see if the pump is pumping, and get it running to see what
exactly is the issue. I'm hoping it is something not too bad, seems
like a tranny doesn't just up and quit one day with no progressive failure.

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-08 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
My 300SEL had the extra plumbing with the kick down valve, which, I might add,
is NLA. Mine was disconnected as it had apparently failed in the kick down
position, according to the PO.

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

It's particular to the 300SEL

Would anyone know the difference between the 722.319 & 722.351
transmissions?

One WEB site I found indicates the 319 is for 1986-1989 300-SELs. This
same site shows the 722.351 being used by 1990-1991 300SELs.

germanstar.com shows the 722.319 being used by 1986-1991 300SELs.

Arthur Dalton posted some info on 722.3xx and 722.4xx transmissions in
the following thread. The 319 was not mentioned.

722.3/4 trans start gear [ 1st/2nd ?]

I know how to locate my transmission # and knowing which 722.3xx I have
isn't the issue. I'm curious about the difference between the 319 & 351.

Exclamation

The 722.319 doesn't have up-shift "delay" solenoid & plumming that the
722.351 has!

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Smoke silver. Front was good, rear was good. got new rear springs and
subframe mounts.

Tinworm got it, and then it got broadsided and then the vac pump puked
its marbles into the chaincase. Engine needs a cam and towers, chain
and maybe lower guides. Upper guides were all new.

It is still the best running OM603 i've had! N+And not near as rusty as
what I have now!
