Why couldn't we have a street level mall with office space on the second floor and living space on the 3rd thru 6th floors? When the space is available then the prices will come down. I don't know about the U.S., but in Canada this has been done for some time in Montreal, and Toronto got onto the bandwagon a decade or so ago with 'mixed' condo/retail developments. However, two issues restrict this. First, it's largely seen as an option for childless 'urban' couples or singles. Second, even when built up 20 storeys, developers want the downtown land to pay -- to what gets built is overwhelmingly 'luxury' accommodations. If we want inner city living to be a viable option for families, someone is going to have to come up with clever ways for children to be children without being 'out on the street', for obvious reasons, and make it as free as playing in a city park, for financial reasons. It's not that I'm strongly against repealing the tax, mind you. If people want shitty roads like Michigan has, then they can repeal it, and the more power to 'em. I just resent the idea of the majority sticking it to those of us who drive diesels while removing the tax on themselves. I guess that's what happens when you have mob rule, otherwise known as the public initiative process.

In Washington, the gas tax is constitutionally mandated to be used solely for transportation needs, and as you'll soon see, we don't have no stinkin transportation needs here--no siree. I hear some genius has gotten a proposal on the ballot that would eliminate the 9.5 cent tax on gasoline, but not on diesel. As if we aren't paying enough of a price premium already. Re: [MBZ] Back on the 'net
Perhaps someday folks will realize that if they want to live in the country they should find work in the country. If they want to work in town, then live in town. Why should I get all upset over someones long commute because they live 30 miles away from work? Why should I pay extra taxes or tolls (piece of shit Narrows bridge project) to make a carpool lane. (Note: the new bridge will add only one carpool lane in each direction, no additional capacity for other vehicles. The toll by law, must start at $3.00. They predict it will rise to $7.00 by the end of the first year. The carpool folks believe that they are so holy that they should be exempt from the toll altogether.) Yes, I traded my 2 1/2 acres of country to live in the city until I retire. My 4 mile commute takes 9-10 minutes. My previous commute was 23 miles and depending on the time of day was up to 1.5 hours. If an accident or jumper is involved all bets are off. The legislature still hasn't figured out that when the public votes no, they mean no. Ken Currently on my boat paying road fuel taxes for absolutely no benefit. The 9.5 cent increase would be taken from me on every gallon of boat fuel with no recourse. Yes I am aware that I can get 1/3 of the total tax back by filing extra paperwork, which I do. The other 2/3 is lost to Olympia. Please forgive Casey, as he is living in the liberal black hole surrounding the state capitol. Not only is he an avid Biodiesel user, but French cars appeal to him. As you will learn, there are no french cars allowed in Auburn, even if they are diesel powered. If it is a truck by the big three, then it can be diesel. Should you need some heavy Benz lust, hit the regional show and shine up I-5 in Mountlake Terrace this weekend. 10 am at the Nile Country club.
