That's a big shop-vac. But yes, that will definitely happen.

Years ago I had a little oil drain tray that had threaded flanges for standard
two-liter soda bottles. Seemed like a neat idea, drain the oil neatly into the
bottles for disposal, but if you drained the oil when it was hot (as one
should) the soda bottles would just shrivel up like raisins.

You don't need a high vacuum to extract oil. Just need the pressure in the tank
to be lower than ambient air pressure. If you use a real vacuum pump you might
want to include some sort of regulator that will limit the vacuum so your
container doesn't collapse.

A shop-vac will provide more than enough vacuum to do the job.

I had always thought it should, but I don't know. Be the first to find out!
Make sure your chosen reservoir can survive a substantial vacuum.
My first one did not.

Re: [MBZ] Changing Oil on My W163

2024-01-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The decent choices are not cheap, but if you go cheap you’ll be disappointed.

Cheap (<$100): Topsider. The classic vacuum pump oil sucker, it’s bulky and
kludgy to use, but simple. The crimped seams tend to leak if you store the oil
in it for very long.

Mid-priced (~$100): MityVac and Chinese knockoffs. Commonly used, works fine,
but not substantial in that it has a lot of plastic parts and isn’t terribly
heavy duty.

Expensive ($150-up): Harbor Freight has a good, solidly-built oil extractor.
You can go up the scale to a John Dow brand extractor, too, if you want
additional features.

I have owned and used all of these over the years except for the MityVac. I
currently have two of the Harbor Freight extractors, which, in my experience,
have been the best. Yes, they’re not cheap, but they’re pretty indestructible
and they hold six gallons of fluid, which is also nice.

If there was a negative for this one, it would be the size and having to use
another means to transport the waste oil. However, there’s no reason why you
couldn’t transport the whole thing if you wanted. That, and with the others I
transported the oil in alternate containers anyway.

The MityVac seems nice, but I’ve heard a lot of complaint from people about it
being flimsy along with issues with the line fittings sealing well.

I bought my first oil extractor (Topsider) in 1988. I’ve migrated to the HF
model after all those years of trying to find the best solution.

I use a topside oil sucker from Harbor Freight. Will never go back to draining
oil from the bottom, unless the pan geometry requires it.

I have a refrigerant tank with a barb fitting to which the sucker hose
attaches, and a hole drilled in it that a 1.25” (?) vac hose goes in and fits
tightly. At the time I made the original using a plastic gas can the barb and
hose was $2, now maybe $5.

Get the oil warm, stick the sucker hose in the dipstick tube (assuming it has
one, get a hose that fits tightly), stick the vac hose in the hole, turn on
vac, go have a beer or two.
