Those are tempering temperatures only. Actual hardening requires cherry-red for
steel. I'm sure most of you know this better than I do. And someone else
mentioned self-cleaning oven, but couldn't that damage the temper of some
alloys?

put it on "self clean" and see what happens. When the dynamic duo return, you

Hard question, since the component parts are multiple different materials
and to truly restore to the FAA requirement of "As good or better than new
manufacturer standards" required dismantle to component level, then each
component held at temp without damage to the base material.

So, it's not a function of simply pitching an assembled nozzle into the
barbque and waiting... General terms are 450F to 475F for time adjusted
for component size, with ramp up and cool down so metallurgy of base part
is not affected by cleaning process all documented to FAA satisfaction,
of course.

I hadn't heard of #9 injector cleaner before this month so I haven't tried it,
but the stuff Grant describes on diesel injectors sounds more like what #9 is
designed to remove (combustion residue) than the varnish on vergasser
injectors.

Re: [MBZ] Cleaning Injectors

2019-06-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Both the short and long answer to that question is "NO".

For a nozzle to convert a liquid to atomized droplets requires very close
tolerances between a number of components inside the nozzle. Carbon is a
strong material that doesn't "dissolve easily" and when baked on in the
heat and pressure of combustion is "pretty damn durable" Example, the
space shuttle wings were coated with carbon tiles to resist reentry heat.

Same stuff on your nozzles. I have never tried Hoppes bore cleaner for
cleaning nozzles, but I have tried a lot of other products, Of the ones
that did work, they only "worked a little bit", and certainly not enough to
restore good function.

Thus, the success of adding Hoppes to your tank is suspect. The procedure I
invented and got approved by FAA involved dismantling the nozzle to
component level and baking those carbon covered parts in a controlled
industrial oven for specific time and temp, which completed the carbon burn
process and converted the carbon to a light gray ash, which was then
removed by hand scrub of the components labor intensive, yes... but
expensive jet engine parts were worth the labor cost.

But more importantly, can you clean your Jet A nozzles with Hoppe’s?

I like to dab a little behind each ear for that “just came from the range”
smell.

Just happens, I have more than passing experience with fuel nozzles used in
Jet A environment and Diesel engines. [Jet A and No 2 diesel are nearly
identical except Jet A has additives to retard gel point [it's cold at
altitude] ]

Bottom line, in BOTH uses, the nozzles become coated with coke and carbon
in use, The accumulation of carbon degrades spray pattern and droplet
formation. The size of fuel droplets is critical in flame path formation
and fuel efficiency, ie large droplets don't ignite well, thus less heat
energy, more carbon formation.

So, it's not just a vergasser issue.

P.S. How one would pronounce it depends upon which language it is:

 French: Hop's

 German: Hoh-puh's

 American: Hop-ee's

I have heard and used only the last one.

i doubt Dissel injectors get the varnish buildup that gasoline ones do,
for a variety of reasons. Starting with pressure and ending with fuel.
