So just keep your points setup and reinstall if the Pertronix setup fails. Points require effort on the regular. You WILL have to adjust points. This is worse on an engine that sits around a lot. You MIGHT have to replace a hall effect sensor on a Pertronix unit... -Curt On Friday, December 15, 2023 at 03:28:34 PM EST, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: I follow a boating forum as well and folks on that forum rave about how great the Pertronix setups are on old MerCruiser engines. Some time ago I sent an email to Pertronix, they said to call them. I've never bothered. Its one of those things, some day I'll get the resistor pack caught on a tree branch and rip it off, then I'll replace the coil we have with a 12v version removing the need for the resistor... -Curt On Friday, December 15, 2023 at 01:59:24 PM EST, Craig via Mercedes wrote: On Fri, 15 Dec 2023 16:47:39 + (UTC) Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: > I put a Pertronix kit into my 1952 Farmall Super M and it's been > flawless. Re: [MBZ] Don’t See These Too Often
Relatively reliable up until you leave the ignition on and not at all reliable if the bushing in the distributor wears at all. I put a Pertronix kit into my 1952 Farmall Super M and it's been flawless. The tractor started right up and has run perfectly from day 1. The only problem I've had with it has been the disconcerting ability of a nut on the 12v to 6v resistor to loosen itself. So you're driving along and all of a sudden the tractor shuts right off. This happened even after I use locktite on the nut. I need to find a real 12v coil that I can use to replace the 6v unit so I can get rid of the resistor pack. -Curt On Friday, December 15, 2023 at 11:34:39 AM EST, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Points and condenser are pretty reliable. Re: [MBZ] Don’t See These Too Often
I had a coworker who did one of the Holley throttle body conversions on an old Ford truck. It was about 4-5 years ago, so I’m sure things have been improved as they went along, but in his case, it was pretty easy, according to him. I know he had to add some sensors or signals for the unit, but that was easy, too. Then it was a matter of tuning it, which I don’t recall what that involved, but I do know it ran pretty well out of the box with a generic configuration. I think it set him back around $1000 and change. For whatever reason the engine he had was marinized (water-cooled exhaust manifolds) and it was unique as far as the fuel system, so he wasn’t able to find the correct carb for it. Rather than kludge something, he went with the Holley conversion. -D > On Dec 14, 2023, at 10:16 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes > wrote: > > These days there are lots of options for throttle body injection. Re: [MBZ] Don’t See These Too Often
It depends. There was a company (“something Engineering”) in CA that made retrofit kits for some Solex 4A1 applications using a Holley 5200, which was a two-barrel progressive carb that was used by Ford and other companies in that same time frame. I did a Holley 5200 conversion on an M130 that had a Solex 4A1. It was nearly a direct bolt-up in that case, as I expect it would be in the case of the M110. The only issue you would have to deal with would be the linkage. On the M130 it nearly matched up perfectly with the factory linkage. I think I had to get a different length rod for the linkage that had the ball sockets on each end, otherwise, that was it. The curve for the carburetor and its progressive linkage didn’t match the engine perfectly, but it worked. I thought it ran better, but in fairness to the Solex, I was driving the car with it in some of the worst shape it could be in. -D > On Dec 13, 2023, at 9:57 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: > > On Thu, 14 Dec 2023 00:48:39 + "dan penoff.com via Mercedes" > wrote: > >> I’ve owned one car with a Solex 4A1, and that was enough experience for >> me to understand that I would never, ever, own a car with one again. > > Is it possible to change to a different carburetor? > > > Craig > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Don’t See These Too Often
Yes, they are. However, I was never a fan of the M110, which was a bit unfair as I never owned one. I just heard complaints about top end problems, like valves and valve guides, that sort of stuff. That and I recall one I looked at was normally aspirated, that is, it had a Solex 4A1 carb, which is a major league kiss of death. If there was a carb in the MB product line that deserved derision, this is the one. Zeniths were absolutely wonderful compared to the Solex. I’ve owned one car with a Solex 4A1, and that was enough experience for me to understand that I would never, ever, own a car with one again. -D > On Dec 13, 2023, at 7:39 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes > wrote: > > Those are period correct. > > On Wed, Dec 13, 2023 at 3:53 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes < > mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > >> Are those OE foglights?
