I am not usually a Leadfoot, but that Jag was so fast and so fun to drive, that I did tend to drive it a little faster than normal. The car was just ready to leap (pun intended). The first time I drove it, the previous owner showed me how to take off from a stop without squealing the tires. It really took a concerted effort to take off slowly. But, it was scary fast when I floored at it any speed over 5 mph. I have heard people say a car will throw you back in your seat and I always thought that was an exaggeration. But, this car really would. And with all that torque, you really had to fight the wheel because the torque twisted the car. Re: [MBZ] I must be pregnant
The guy I worked for when I was in tech school had 7-8 Jags at any given time, although no more than one or two were ever working simultaneously. He had: 2- Mark IVs 1-XK140 1-XKE 2-XJ6s 1-XJ12 The XK140 barely ran, but when it did.the XKE was a badass car as well, even though it had the 3.8 liter six, and not the 4.2 or V12. I got to drive the cars home if I wanted, as most of my hours were spent keeping them running. The XJ12 was the most amazing one, as you would be driving down a local road thinking you were doing 35 and would look down at the speedo and realize it was more like 60. The sense of speed was almost nonexistent in that car. Too bad it was a carbureted model. Six side draft Solexs' that had to be balanced about every 500-750 miles or the gas mileage went from maybe 10 mpg well into the single digits. I think you would adapt pretty quickly. I switch back and forth, in summer, between the new F150 with the coyote engine and the old non turbo 300D and really don't notice much difference. The truck will growl and go if I really step on it but I seldom need to do that and generally try not to abuse it. The diesel is fine in stop and go traffic in town. It is a bit slow on the merge lane situations but apart from that, no big deal. I don't drive it all that much on 2 lane highways where I need to pass quickly and if I do, then I drive accordingly. I know the roads that I drive on well enough to know where a place to pass will be if there is no oncoming traffic and then plan ahead to drop back before hand and then come up on the car I want to pass at a faster speed than it is travelling. If the way is clear, around I go, and if it is not, then I drop back and wait for the next opportunity. RB On 30/01/2015 9:44 AM, Donald Snook via Mercedes wrote: I’m sure you can get used to it. Auto box twin to the '78 240D that Dwight, Dimitiri and I have (or in Dimitri's case currently) owned. I can't really tell from your link but it looks as though theres probably no hole in the roof.. You ought to buy the '78 from Dimitri and transplant the 4spd. The series plugs are easy to do away with and the car starts so much better with parallel. Make big cables for it. I used 10ga which was an upgrade from what I think was probably 18ga when I got it. Fred gave me some 8ga wire that I'd intended to use but eventually used for battery cables on my Cub Cadet. -Curt From: Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] I must be pregnant
Funny you should mention that... I picked up an automatic 79 240D in December with 100k miles on it. The body has had its share of paint and repairs from some fender benders, but its not rusty and the interior is wonderful. Its the first 240D I've had since about 2004... and the second one since my first mercedes, a 82 240D with a four speed that i had from 1998-2001. Its slower than I remember these cars being, but after sometime behind the wheel I remember just how enjoyable they are. Every bit of acceleration seems like a gift, and keeping up with highway traffic (or even passing someone!) seems to prove that you don't need more than 62hp in reality. Very satisfying. You are forced to carefully think out your moves on the road and be more aware of your surroundings. It makes you a better driver. I love the simplicity of the car. Series glow plugs, mono radio, manual everything, no sunroof. Big options on the car are AC and the automatic. I rebuilt the injectors and set the cam and injection timing to get out every hp I could. Its really lovely to drive. Here are some crummy pictures I took of it in the rain earlier this month: http://images.jaimekop.com/2015_01_04_240D/ I need to find another one with a 4 speed and keep it long-term. But, they're getting pretty impossible to find these days. Jaime On Wed, Jan 28, 2015 at 4:26 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Because I have a strange urge. You're forgetting I'm an originality freak. I'm happy to keep the series plugs :) They work! -Curt From: Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com javascript:; To: Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] I must be pregnant
I liked that the '70 had no labels on the controls - you were supposed to read the manual, and learn what each knob, lever, and switch did before you drove the car. I think a lot was lost when they moved away from the double wishbone front suspension (cost savings). The 115 and the 107 were the best driving MB's I have owned. Then you would win the gold tri star prize. Some years ago when i was a volunteer fire fighter one of our rival paid dept's got a new ladder truck. First time they used it they squashed a Honda with the outriggers. Sweet. Re: [MBZ] I must be pregnant
My first MB was a 71 250. In the middle of the production they started putting the 2.8 engine in them (the one with the crazy carbs). It was a beautiful red with white interior. I loved that car. The guy I bought it from spent $6000-7000 restoring it. I bought it for $3000 and loved it. Donald H.
