Pretty sure it was a Wheelskin that I put on the W140. A bit tedious to install
correctly, but when done right it’s nearly imperceptible from the original
cover (if it had one.)

a bit of effort to make it nice. We've used Wheelskins covers on a
few of ours. Nice, but the installation is a bit tedious.

Absolutely, to each his/her own. If it was really rough or there was concern
about it hurting me with scratching or cutting, I would do it as an interim fix
until I could restore/replace.

The restoration process isn’t difficult, but time consuming. A lot of
fill/dry/sand, rinse and repeat until it’s nice. Much like bodywork, which I
hate, so the option of a brand new $500 steering wheel versus many hours of
work that might end up with a less than satisfactory result was pretty
attractive to me. My time has value, too.

I replaced the steering wheel on my 2008 ML550 because the lacing was
unraveling. I tried re-sewing which didn’t really help much, as the OE cover
was loose now and would move around when gripped no matter what, so I found a
nice used replacement for about $150 and swapped it out. I replaced the
telematics switches while I was there as well, as they were getting
grungy/sticky, too. Swapping a steering wheel isn’t difficult, especially if
you have the MB driver for the airbag screws. It’s so much nicer since I did
that.

I have a leather wrap on my W211 steering wheel. The original varnish/plastic
finish on the wood sections was cracked and chipping off. I bought a lace-on
leather wrap that is thin (it's just leather, no padding), it fits really
tightly, feels nice in the hands, and IMO looks good. I appreciate that it's a
matter of personal preference however.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting 220Sb on BAT

2024-06-01 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Nearly everything expands and contracts with heat. A major source of trouble
would be differential coefficients of expansion between the plastic(s) and
the steel spine. Ideally they minimized that by choice of plastic, but did
they?
(Consider the lowly vacuum tube or incandescent light bulb. The metal that
goes through the glass envelope was carefully chosen so that its expansion
coefficient matched the glass, so that the seal would never break from the
extreme thermal cycling present in that environment.)

Expansion and contraction could cause cracking if the material is not resilient
enough, but the fact that there are fissures and no lost material indicates that
it is the original plastic _shrinking_, slowly, that is the root cause here.
(Unless
you think that the steel core is slowly _expanding_?)

Even repaired, it probably will eventually do the same again/more, but it'll
take some time. And you can always repeat the repair in another decade
or three if it bothers you.

Or put a leather wrap on it.

Nothing, but consider that you’re looking at material that’s been exposed to
the elements for all intents and purposes for over 60 years, I wouldn’t be
terribly concerned myself. That and I would also be storing the vehicle in far
less extreme conditions that it had probably experienced over it’s life up to
that point. And no matter what, it will still look better than it did...

Exactly. POR-15 made a steering wheel restoration kit some time ago that was
basically a couple blocks of their epoxy putty and some sandpaper. That’s all
it takes. I’ve never done it, but I was prepared to before Jamie found the
reamining stock being sold, so I bought a new one. And it was breathtaking!

age, and once the accumulated stress exceeds the remaining
material strength a fissure opens up, and only gets wider with
increasing age. Nothing is loose, mobile, or crumbly. It seems

No. The pieces of remaining steering wheel material are firmly anchored in
place to a steel ring which is the foundation for the steering wheel. It’s just

Re: [MBZ] Interesting but I think price is too high

2024-04-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I believe I have related this story before about a tornado in maybe 1974
that went through Indiana and did huge amounts of damage.

I belonged to the flying club at Purdue and there was a deal if you
washed and waxed an airplane you could get a couple hours of flying time
for free.  I corralled a buddy who also lived in Fort Wayne, we were HS
friends and classmates and he would go home with me occasionally, to
come out and help me do the plane.  The club had its planes at this
little private airport a bit NE of WLafayette kinda out in the country.
We were out there one afternoon, I think it was a Sunday doing the
plane, had washed it outside then pushed it into the hangar to wax it
out of the sun.  It was a gorgeous spring afternoon.

After awhile maybe around 3ish I noticed the sky was getting a little
weird, kind of a yellow glow, wind had died down and the insects had
quit making bug noises.  The guy who owned the airport lived in a little
house there and had a coupla dogs that were acting kinda weird.  I told
my buddy we should probably think about going back to campus as I had
seen this before and had an idea of what was coming.  I had a car at the
time for a little while that my parents had let me take to school for
some reason I forget and had driven it to the airport.  Anyway, we got
in the car and put on the radio and the announcers were all screaming
about storms and tornadoes so we said we had made a good call. Got about
halfway back to campus and it started raining so hard we couldn't even
see out of the windshield.  I pulled over best I could to what I thought
was the side of the road and stopped. Wind was incredible and we both
thought we were in the middle of a tornado, the radio was saying there
was one going through and it was bad.  We were both about as scared as
20yos can be because it was pretty rough.

After a few minutes the rain and wind stopped and the storm passed on by
and sun came out, it was weird.  We got back to campus and of course
everyone in the dorm was talking about it.  There were a couple of
high-rise dorms maybe 1/4-1/2 mile away from ours that you could see,
they were all saying the tornado was coming right at one of them but
passed over at the last second and went up into the cloud then dropped
down again and headed NE.  Next few days the news was full of reports
about the storm and tornado and damaged it had caused for like
20-30miles.  It was crazy.

Next weekend I got my buddy and we took the plane up for a reconnoiter.
Flew to the SW a bit and found where the ground path had started then
followed it for the whole path and it was 20-30miles.  Stayed pretty low
so we could see the damage on the ground.  It had the whole deal -- 2x4s
through phone poles, the path going between a house and shed or garage
like a plow had torn up the ground but left everything either side
completely intact.  The craziest thing was this steel truss bridge over
the Wabash river had been picked up off its pilings and moved like 100ft
downstream  and dropped intact in the river.

I remembered really bad tornadoes, Palm Sunday in probably 1965 or 1966
or so that had even worse devastation. My parents went on a drive to
oogle the damage and that made an impression on me.  This one was right
up there.

A couple years later kind of the same situation, one spring afternoon it
was getting a little weird, tornadoes were around, radio was saying
there was one to the west.  I was living in this apartment complex at
the time, my window faced west, I was looking out and shonuff about
5-10miles away I could see one dancing from a cloud.  I kept an eye on
it for a bit but it went on north of where I was and I don't think it
actually did much damage anywhere.  Scary enough though.

We have them here on the Island too, I think a few years back associated
with one of the hurricanes I had a small one hit right in front of the
house in the woods, a few days later I noticed a bunch of small trees
down in a swirl pattern.  A bit later I checked out the recorded radar
path and it looked like it probably did come right through but here the
strength was not registering so I guess it was not too strong.  It was
winding and raining pretty hard at the time in the hurricane so did not
hear or see it directly.

Be vigilant!

Re: [MBZ] Interesting but I think price is too high

2024-04-29 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Two nights ago we had a batch go through. First time in 40+ years I went to bed
with a tornado warning underway.
Lightning struck a 525kV line tower about 400 yards from the house as we were
watching the sideways rain. One kind of forgets how impressive that is. The
whole experience was a little overwhelming to my youngest daughter who had
never experienced the routine having lived in AZ all her life.
I finished all the projects my dad had ready for me (rear brakes on the Ram I
traded him, replacing a couple of janky boards on his expansive deck and
prepping it for staining, setting a precast concrete stoop off his front porch,
fetching and installing a modem for his house), we’ve done the requisite family
visits introducing the new granddaughter, so it’s time to fly back to AZ
tomorrow.
Little Inch is busting some top teeth through so the trip home might be a
little fussy.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting Benzing experience

2023-10-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Many years ago I was coming back from northern Maine not long after Memorial
Day.

There was an accident and the whole highway was down to one lane at a walking
pace. Occasionally somebody would decide they wanted to take the closest exit
and would slip down the breakdown lane. Just ahead of me were a pair of monster
5th wheel campers pulled by diesel dually pickups. They decided they'd try the
breakdown lane trick.

It'd been a wet spring and the shoulder was soft. No problem for a car, just
stay on the pavement. Well the wheels of that big camper hit the soft shoulder
and it started to slide. It went slow but steady, I couldn't believe the driver
kept driving but I guess he thought he could save it. By the time he decided he
couldn't it was too late and the whole rig slid slowly into the ditch, the
right side of the camper completely buried in the muck.

His buddy steered back into the travel lane and never stopped...

Going faster than anybody else, whipping in and out of traffic, etc.  I'm

Accidents waiting to happen if you ask me.

Once saw a nice new big RV on its side on the freeway, with the new towing
truck also tipped over on its side.
Stater said it was due to too much speed on the corner, probably
exacerbated by wind, and maybe evasion/braking
due to the onramp that was right there too.  Had plenty of time to chat,

Agree, and many of those RV trailers don't really weigh very much. Stick
framing and plywood with fiberglass paneling on frame made from angle-iron.
That doesn't help in a gusting crosswind.

I have found that a tad below 70, so like 68 or 69 is kind of a sweet spot as I
am just a bit slower than the speed limit so I’m not having to pass a lot of
other vehicles except for the occasional semi. So there’s not a lot of drama
with having contention with other vehicles. And I can keep a good stopping
distance ahead of me.

Ok 722.6 that’s what I was thinking. I sent a msg have not heard back.
Connector might be buggered or the TCM was bad to begin with or fluid leak not
the trans. Likely nothing significant esp if some jackleg mech was doing the
work. I could probably get it sorted in the driveway.

It’s maybe 4hr away but could be worth the trip. Quick fix and easy flip. I
really can’t fit in those things so of no particular interest as a fun driver.

I had people loballing me on my $400 Focus parts car. It seems that the lower
the asking price, the more the cheapskates come out of the woodwork.

That's a first gen SLK (R170), so I believe they're all 722.6.
Should be straightforward.
Ran after swapped, then quit working properly.
Either defective conductor plate, oily TCU, or installer error most
likely.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting...

2023-06-10 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
If the car has been sitting unused and not running for some time and is a
gas car, which means the last tank was most likely ethanol fuel, the tank
will be loaded with "ethanol varnish" and the fuel system will be plugged
with it. Expect to have to do a fuel tank removal and cleaning, all
fuel lines, complete engine fuel delivery system replacement, or [if
possible] rebuild...
$$$ .. to do all this??? Your best guess.. still won't be enough, most
likely.
But, if it's nice enough car to warrant that level of work.. and cheap
enough to warrant that level of further investment.. you might just get
lucky.
Good luck..

That's 18538 miles/year, 1545 miles/month. For a 5-day work week drive,
260 times per year, that's 71.3 miles/day.

If I worked in Albuquerque, I would drive that amount every day, and some
more on Sunday and Saturday.

So, very doable.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting Trivia

2021-10-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Talking to this guy at LKQ today he says his nephew (who is also A parts puller
there) bought a 2010 E430 (I think that was it) from a guy who brought it in to
sell as the air shocks (which I guess the car has) were collapsed and he didn’t
want to pay for new ones so he was going to sell it to LKQ. The nephew bought
it from him for $700. They were going to fix it this afternoon with shocks from
somewhere, then flip it. If it’s in decent shape that’s probably $6-7k at
least.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting Trivia

2021-10-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It was a perfect storm, generated by the brains of those who lobby
congress... The great crash of 2008 left people out of work, broke, and
underwater on their house mortgages. They were not able to buy a new car
when the garage they would keep it in was in foreclosure.
Then, CFC program came out to sweep available cheap cars off the trading
floor and "stimulate" new car sales [remember Chevy was bankrupt?, and
Chrysler? Ford was the only car company with its head above water [barely]
Banks would not make car loans unless you were so rich you didn't need
one, because they were busted and living on "bailout money".
To force new car sales [stimulate was the magic word used] the government
bought and crushed anything that would run or tow into the CFC lot.
2009 through 2011 were lean years for car sales... and everyone else...
Then, slowly, people went back to work, banks loaned money, houses built
and sold, new cars
It's been a hard run since 2008 and the fallout is still falling out.
$10.00 per gallon gas [coming real soon] is another social engineering
program to stimulate EV car sales. [That magic word again "stimulate"] ...
more electric generation ignored to feed those EV cars..
Reporter: Dr. Einstein, what is the difference between ignorance and genius?
Dr. Einstein: There is no shortage of ignorance.

Aren't those wires also live when using the ODB port to power the system?
The battery in a trunk you can't open does require something like the ODB
port, but I wonder if the lighter socket won't do the same thing?

That's what I thought.
My earlier comment was based on the idea that I would not want to part
that car out.
I'd gladly part out a 300D to save it, I wouldn't part it out to save a
300D.

I suspect that they are talking about the back of the differential
facing the back bumper.
It does not need to be removable because the front of the differential
is removable along with the gears.

I wonder if their replacement cover just glues on over the rusted out piece?

In that brochure, I learned the differential covers for Toyota 4Runner,
FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, and Tundra vehicles are welded in place. The problem
with the factory parts is they are made of thin-gauge stamped steel,
which lets rust eat away faster than other areas.

Their fix was to make a replacement cover with thicker steel -- not what
I would consider a lifetime fix, but since there were no replacement
covers available before they introduced their part, I guess it's an
improvement.

I do, though, find it amazing any manufacturer would weld differential
covers in place!

Well, it is not without permission. If you read the fine print
that you agree to, it covers that stuff. At least Google is
better than Apple or Microsoft - who don't say what they gather,
or how the use it... Nor does Google make a user agree to NOT try
to bypass or shutoff such activities.

Seems most folks are happy to trade convenience for privacy.

I just looked, there were only 5 data points for a limited time (mostly
specific days recently), one at Lowes, 2 at road intersections, one in
the middle of the airport here, and one at the beach.  On another day it
had me at home.  I'm thinking that this is when you might use Google
Maps or something, I don't know where they get the info.  I shut most of
that location stuff off on my phone, it seems to work.  It is kinda
creepy though.

It is all in the fine print somewhere. Whenever you use any sort of
software, there is an offer to let you read the rules and a button that
lets you say "I Agree" without having to read it all. Do you know anyone
who reads it? It is not like they give you any choice if you need or
want the use of the software.
