Re: [MBZ] MGs -- WAS - OT Supreme Court upholds gun rights

2008-06-29 Thread LarryT
I was always tinkering with it - had SU carbs which I found very easy to
tune - when I followed the instructions. The points were a PITA to change
and adjust - had to remove the distr to get to things easily.

The worst problem I ever had was 2 weeks after a tune up - it would run a
while, then cough, spit and backfire. I'd sit beside the road keeping it
idling until all of a suddeb Vrom! It would rev as free as ever.

I'd roar off down the road until later when it would do it again. Once when
parked acorss from a gas station - the good kinds, the kinds with
mechanics - he yelled from across the street - sounds like the condenser!
Got any grass??

We got together and he attached a temp condenser with alligator clips -
problem solved. Replaced the cond the next day and never had more
problems. The mech said condensers often fails after 2 weeks -- or never.

That and the fuel pump were the biggest problems. Lucas got a bad name when
people would not maintain things properly - then connections would become
intermittant and the Prince of Darkness would be blamed.

Anyway - love the car - can;t wait to get her drivable again.

You missed the winky face after that sentence ;-) It was to tease Wonky.

You must keep your valves adjusted to have gone that many miles
without cracking the head. Does your have the SU or Stromberg carbs?
I used to be good tuning the SUs - but had to do it often.

Check out www.mossmotors.com and you'll see a huge website dedicated to
 old
UK sports cars. They recently opened a east coast warehouse near
Petersburg Va (near me) ;-) so I;ll be able to get my MGB parts even
 faster.

Moss stocks virtually *every* part - altho there are vendors who charge
lower prices who do not stock as many parts.

You should see the huge turnout when we have a Brit Car Show -- even in this
small town there will be hundreds. The parts are reasonable and they're
easy to work on --

I bought my MGB in 1970 for $400, put a fender on it and a fuel pump then
drove it daily for 20 years puting over 350K miles on it. It only let me
down once (so I needed a tow to get home) when a fuep pump died.

Makes me want to go out buy an MG or something.

Seriously, I've always wanted one but never got around to buying an MGB. I
have too many other car motorcycle projects.

Hey Tom,
You;ll love it if you do - very simple and easy to work on.

Just don't let a fear of finding parts prevent you buying one - it's never a
problem
