With all the bells and whistles and sophisticated emissions controls on my
2014 GLK 250 I am in no hurry to remove the cover.

Re: [MBZ] Missing engine cover

2022-04-30 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I don't think it indicates anything too sloppy. If it were my car, I
likely would have left it off.  I probably would have kept it to put
back on if I was to sell it, but I would rather be able to see the
engine than some plastic cover with a company logo on it. My F150
doesn't have any sort of cover over the engine.  Modern engines do look
a bit messy with stuff all over the place, and I remain convince that
the only purpose of the cover is to hide all of that from the average
purchaser who has no real interest in what is happening under the hood.
I remember when I bought a 1986 Taurus, that the salesman pointed out to
me that things like the oil dipstick had yellow labels. He told me that
the only things that I should ever touch were the ones with the yellow
labels. Everything else was to be dealt with by the professionals. I
guess he thought I was an idiot but I assumed that it was he who had no
idea about what was under the hood.

A few years later, I had to change out the head gaskets on that engine
and I touched all sorts of things that didn't have yellow labels.

The real question is whether the cover will fit with the K air filter
and hood stack?

Does it just snap into place or are there fasteners?

Good God Andrew, just buy the damned car if you like it.

The cover is just there to make the under hood area look neat and tidy
when deep pocketed buyers want to see under the hood. Modern cars have
hoses and wires running all over the place. They don't look tidy like an
old flathead that had one pipe leading to the carb and spark plug wires.

It serves no real purpose and I would cheerfully chuck it in the dumpster.

I think cosmetic engine covers are stupid. WTF is the _hood_ for?

Re: [MBZ] Missing engine cover

2022-04-28 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I think the engine cover is mostly cosmetic, but don't take my word for it.

Hard to imagine a dealership service tech forgetting to replace it, but I
suppose it's possible. Also possible is that it was serviced somewhere else
that does not report to Carfax, and they left it off. Or the prior owner pulled
it off and sold it on eBay before he traded in the car.

If you think the price + $300 to replace the cover is still fair, buy it. But
you might want to have a prepurchase inspection done by an MB dealer. What
other parts might be missing?
