Re: [MBZ] OT: AC Gauge set

I have a set about like that. Guages have scale for both R12 and 134. The
high/low side hoses screw onto 134 fittings. On some cars (mb) these will
screw onto the R12 fittings on the car.

Kaleb,

You can do this:

Hook the yellow line to a R134a tank but keep the tank valve turned off.
Screw a high side R134a adapter onto your recovery system.
Attach the gauge high side to the adapter.
Attach the gauge low side to the car low side.
Open both gauge set valves.
Evacuate the system.

Yea, I could do it that way. Right now, I have a set of R12 guages I am
using with 134 high and low sides connectors. The R12 center line will hook
to the machine. If I want to ad refrigerant from a 134 tank, I take one of
the lines off of a different guage set which seems to fit both size fittings
and that works. Would rather just get an adaptor for the machine and do it
the right way though. May end up just selling this R12 machine and buying
one already setup for 134

I had one of those hoses with a gauge that broke (the end that goes on
the can was plastic, it gets cold...), got another one that is all brass
fittings at O'Reilly's. THey also had a set of high/low gauges there
too. For some reason most of their AC stuff was not on shelves, but the
guy had it on the racks in back.

There is a Snap-On set on eBay right now, any thoughts on that or

Allan,

Snap On would be a very good quality set--make sure it has the quick
disconnect fitting needed for R134 hi and low sides. For comparison, Harbor
Freight
has an average set for around $35 set up for R134 only. Most gauge sets do
not service both r12 and r134 to prevent cross contamination. You can buy a
set of adapters as the gauges themselves usually have both calibrations, plus
R 22. Maybe the Snap On set comes with the adapters?

Snap-on is excellent. But you won't find (and don't want) a single
set for both systems. The oils in particular are not that compatible,
the R134a oil attacks R12 oil IIRC. It stinks, but you are going to
need two sets if you're going to service mineral-oil systems (R12, and

I have a Blue Point (Snap-on's cheaper line) R12 set, and a Harbor
Freight R134a set. The former is much preferable to the latter.
The latter is only of use for my Dodge pickup and friends' vehicles.
Ours are all R12 or compatible.

What about having one manifold and two sets of hoses, and flushing out
the manifold with some type of solvent in between uses? Or is that
being penny-wise and pound-foolish?
