I had the same idea Max. But no idea how to implement it. Moddified water
lift muffler could be one way to do it, I suppose.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] OT: NY Times article about diesel cars in the USA

2016-06-15 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Thanks. I think it's is the way the scrubbers on big diesel ship engines
work; constant spray of fluid downward in a series of cones, and exhaust
traveling up through the spray.

Wet exhausts have a single nozzle injecting seawater from the heat
exchanger into the exhaust gas at a mixing elbow. It then runs down into a
rubber hose with the exhaust gas. Some outfits sell little mixing vanes to
put into the hose to further agitate the water and mix it with the gas. I
will probably try that.

Putting more nozzles and an extra pump in to increase the amount of spray
is a great idea, but a lot more work. I am not above welding something like
that up, though. I'm pretty sure nothing like it is available for a smaller
diesel. It would basically be a longer mixing elbow.

Seems like a fine spray would wash soot out of the exhaust stream. Get
some oil burner nozzles (they have various spray patterns and rates)
with a high-pressure water pump (not sure what the pressure an oil
burner runs at but it has to be fairly high I think to pump through
those little nozzles) and see what might work?

Seems like they might want to re-think diesel trucks, buses,
construction equipment etc.

Those engines tend to be bigger and dirtier than most cars.
I think a lot of the newer big diesel trucks are better than they used
to be but there still seems to be a fair amount of black smoke coming
out of trucks, buses, trains etc.

I also read London plans to follow suit.

In the US, taxes are much higher on Diesel (reverse of Europe), which
explains much.
