Re: [MBZ] OT: cities with the safest drivers
here in Berkeley, we are the home of the self-proclaimed oldest Volvo dealer in the USA; it would appear that many of the first cars sold at that dealership are still crawling the local roads. it would seem that Volvos have historically been bought by people who are trying to protect themselves from the dangers of the public roads (read: mostly from themselves), and for some reason seem to require a lack of driving ability or preclude any ability to exhibit any driving skill. it's as if those who can't drive and/or those who love them will get a Volvo, or something about the cars causes one to have such a sense of invulnerability as to reduce the drivers need to pay any attention to what they're actually doing and/or what is going on around them. aside from the Prii, you can almost bet that the vehicle holding up traffic in front of you will be a Volvo, usually a wagon, with any number of stickers proclaiming the owners political statements and allegiance to their Public Broadcasting station of choice. most of the local kids wouldn't want to be associated with their parents old Volvos for some of these very reasons. fortunately for them, most of their families seem to be affluent enough that they're able to get into their ricer-of-choice, or they go to the other end of the extreme and compete with us for the old 617s we know and love so they can make their political statement on a low budget and drive it around on Biofuels. the exception would be the modern higher-performance models; their problem is that they seem to appeal to the same sort of drivers that participate in the same sort of driving styles exhibited most commonly by the BMW, Audi, and later Saab drivers. personally, i bought a brand-new Volvo some years ago on the basis of its performance specs on paper, and while it returned great power and fuel economy it was so cost-intensive to keep in proper trim that i was happy to take the loss to get out of it less than 2 years later. cheers! e Zoltan Finks wrote: I would guess that the Volvo drivers that are so crummy are the young folk whose parents have bestowed upon them their Swedish safety mobile. The wagons are really big in Seattle for the emergent rock band kids to haul their instruments to gigs. Way too many clapped out volvos from the 70-80's crammed with amps on a friday and saturday. My son and his wife live in Columbia, SC. Doubt they would argue with that ranking. I was there a couple of weeks ago and almost got clobbered by a guy turning across two lanes of traffic into my lane about the time I was getting there. Fortunately there was no one in the other lane so we didn't get a chance to meet BillR Jacksonville FL - home of very friendly drivers [but not necessarily safe ones] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of OK Don And where are the worst drivers? I have to agree. Having driven in Boston, DC, Jax, and now Des Moines, Des Moines drivers go just as fast, but they do signal intentions and look over the shoulder before starting to cut in. I find that the jerks on I-80 / I-35 / I-235 have out-of-state plates, normally Oklahoma. On 4/5/07, OK Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Where are the safest drivers in the country? Jersey City: the guy you are cutting off might be a Mafia Don. New York City: they catch a break after 9/11. Yonkers: manners in honor of the department store by the same name.
