Yes I found the political stuff a bit distracting also. But public health
is inherently political and this will become a huge campaign issue.

I have not heard any other first hand accounts out of Italy. They get high
marks for the coverage at least.

Re: [MBZ] OT Keep Calm and Carry On (Mexican beer virus)

2020-03-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There is a local couple here on the Island who are a band called Shovels and
Rope. They were doing a European tour, I saw the woman at the library a few
weeks ago, she said they were going to be gone until sometime in April. They
are really sweet kids so I was happy for their success and exposure there.

Talking to a friend yesterday who plays with her in another band a bunch of
women have, she said they had to come back last week and cancel the rest of the
tour which was going to Italy and wherever else. They had been in UK, France,
and Germany and maybe a coupla other countries.

This involves the loss of several hundred thousands $$$ in revenues and such
and a big hit to them on their income, and that of the whole circus associated
with their tour and business. I guess they’ll be OK but it is Not Fun for them.

They put on a big festival here every year in late April, I hope that doesn’t
get canceled as it is always a wonderful event, great bands and nice crowd.
I’ll see her Saturday evening at another little show here, will get the latest
word.

Drug manufacturing is such a high profit biz, I was unaware that we
depended on the chicoms for drugs. I was aware that a lot were being
made in india, along with a lot of fakes being made in india. I was not
aware that the usa has pretty much no drug mfg capacity. That is
dangerous for such a drug addicted country.

This scenario has highlighted our (US) over-dependence on medical
supplies (like drugs) from China. When I was in the military
procurement business, we had to source everything for critical systems
from the US or other non-interruptible sources. IMO, we need similar
policies for critical medical supplies.

Here's a nice piece from a Canadian doctor and an Infectious Diseases
Specialist that has been at this for more than 20 years.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/03/an_infectious_disease_doctor_has_a_message_about_the_real_epidemic_out_there.html

"I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a
novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to
find

new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of
those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to
suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge.
But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has
induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic,
stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter
adequately in a post-apocalyptic world."
